In una notte stellata di inizio giugno, la nuova stagione del festival estivo TIVOLIROCK inizia sotto una buona stella, in ogni senso: dopo le scorse edizioni che hanno visto esibirsi artisti internazionali del calibro di Richie Kotzen (The Winery Dogs, ex Poison e Mr. Big) nell´estate 2013, e Kee Marcello (ex Europe) un anno fa, adesso è la volta di gustarci finalmente un altro grande nome della scena mondiale, Milijenko “Michael” Matijevic, il fantastico frontman degli Steelheart, band ottantiana, nonché anche una delle voci della colonna sonora del film “Rockstar” (2001). Nonostante alcuni problemi tecnici verificatisi durante la sua esibizione, la voce e il carisma del vocalist di origine croata sono riusciti a coinvolgere tutti i presenti, accorsi numerosi per questa irripetibile occasione, per vederlo finalmente dal vivo e per salutarlo personalmente dopo lo show. Sebbene non siano stati eseguiti diversi classici dei suoi esordi musicali con la band, come ad esempio “Everybody Loves Eileen”, “She´s Gone” o “Mama Don´t You Cry” e cosi via, questo concerto acustico ci ha riservato alcuni momenti molto speciali e indimenticabili da condividere con Michael: ci ha dimostrato che è ancora capace di cantare non solo su tonalità alte ma anche in modo diverso, reinterpretando ogni canzone in uno stile fresco e moderno, sia con la chitarra che con la voce. Dopo la sua performance, breve ma intensa, nella quale ha eseguito principalmente brani dell´ultimo periodo (“Buried Unkind”, “Twisted Future”, “Electric Chair”) ma senza dimenticare alcune perle storiche (“I´ll Never Let You Go”, e la conclusiva “We All Die Young”) si è rivelato disponibile per firmare autografi e per fare foto con i suoi fans: e si è inoltre dimostrato essere una persona simpatica e affabile quando si è concesso per fare un´intervista con noi di Vero Rock Italia! Durante la sua cena abbiamo parlato delle sue influenze musicali, dei suoi rapporti coi suoi ex compagni di band, dei suoi progetti futuri, delle collaborazioni con altri importanti artisti, e di molto altro ancora!Grazie nuovamente alla Erocks Production per aver organizzato un altro gran bell´evento con un ospite speciale e assai gradito, sperando che possano ancora portare altri celebri artisti ad esibirsi il più presto possibile nella Città Eterna.

Ciao Michael, sono Raffaele di Vero Rock! Prima di iniziare vorrei ringraziarti per il tempo prezioso che ci hai concesso per questa chiacchierata, nonostante la tua stanchezza. Quali sono le tue aspettative da questo imminente tour europeo?
(Milijenko Matijevic): ciao Raffaele, ad essere sincero, non ho alcuna particolare aspettativa da questo tour: per me questi sono momenti speciali da condividere con i miei fan, per incontrare nuovi amici, nuove conoscenze. Quindi in questo senso non mi aspetto niente di particolare, mi aspetto esattamente tutto quello che succede! Quando sei lontano da casa tua è un vero piacere trovarsi tanta gentilezza, tanto affetto da ciascuno di voi a ogni concerto, e queste cose mi danno veramente tanta buona energia.
Parlando delle tue influenze musicali, quali sono le band e gli artisti che hanno profondamente ispirato il tuo modo di cantare e di suonare dal tuo debutto fino ad oggi?
(Milijenko Matijevic): bene, sicuramente direi i Led Zeppelin, principalmente…Yeah, sono cresciuto con loro: dopo di loro solitamente ascoltavo i Pink Floyd, i Bad Company, i Van Halen e molti altri ancora!
Puoi dirci quale è la cosa più divertente che ti è capitata nella tua lunga carriera? Un momento particolare che vuoi ricordare e condividere con noi?
(Milijenko Matijevic): sai, ci sono tante cose divertenti che mi sono capitate (ride), ma in particolar modo ce n´é una che vorrei ricordare: io e gli altri ragazzi degli Steelheart, all´inizio dei ´90s, stavamo suonando a Chi-cago per girare il videoclip di “Everybody Loves Eileen” durante un importante concerto in un teatro, e indossavo i miei pantaloni di pelle lucida e non dimenticherò mai quando mentre stavo urlando, nel bel mezzo del ritornello, si sono strappati improvvisamente ed ero rimasto solamente con la biancheria intima. Quindi le ragazze, tra la folla davanti, erano rimaste senza parole, non potevano immaginare questa inaspettata sorpresa…cosi… Rock ´n´ Roll (ride)!
Abbiamo saputo tristemente che John Fowler, l´ex batterista nonché uno dei membri originali degli Steelheart, é morto nel 2008. Così, sempre se possibile, come lo vuoi ricordare, dopo che è venuto di recente a mancare?
(Milijenko Matijevic): direi che John era sempre felice, da quando lo incontrai per la prima volta fino al giorno prima che morisse. Lo ricordo sempre felice e sorridente, non importa quello che sarebbe successo, lui era sempre sereno, ed è cosi che lo ricordo. Ero ancora in contatto con lui prima che venisse a mancare. Ricordo precisamente che gli feci ascoltare il mio album solista, al quale stavo appunto lavorando: eravamo fuori di un parco, dentro una macchina ad ascoltarlo, e poi, penso siamo morto appena due settimane dopo quel momento. Terribile!
Mi dispiace tantissimo per questo triste episodio. E cosa ci puoi dire invece della tua relazione con gli altri ex compagni di band? Sei ancora in contatto con James Ward e Frank DiCostanzo?
(Milijenko Matijevic): Ho incontrato qualche volta Frank, è un bravo ragazzo, mentre non ho più parlato con Jimi per diverso tempo, probabilmente credo abbia preso una strada differente dalla mia…da quando ab-biamo collaborato insieme e siamo stati in tour per qualche data sempre diversi anni fa.
Riguardo quel terribile incidente che hai avuto a Denver, in Colorado, la notte di Halloween del 1992, durante il tour, quando una torretta di illuminazione ti cadde dietro la testa: dopo questo episodio, un anno dopo la tua riabilitazione, hai deciso di continuare con dei nuovi musicisti pur mantenendo il nome “Steelheart”, ma intraprendendo una diversa direzione musicale rispetto a quella dei primi due storici album. Secondo te, se questo brutto incidente non fosse successo, pensi che forse avresti potuto continuare ancora con la stessa line up di prima, mantenendo lo stesso stile oppure avresti comunque scelto queste differenti sonorità?
(Milijenko Matijevic): bene, è veramente triste ricordare quel terribile incidente avvenuto più di 20 anni fa, ma, sai bene, questa è la vita, e spesso dobbiamo accettare tutto quanto essa ci riserva, sia le cose belle e sia quelle brutte. Sinceramente non penso che il mio incidente abbia inciso con le scelte che feci all´epoca di riformare la band, suonando cose nuove: voglio dire, a quel tempo il mondo musicale stava cambiando, e nuovi stili come il Grunge o l´Alternative Rock andavano molto di moda. Cosi, chi può dire come sarebbe andata diversamente? Io credo nel destino, probabilmente doveva andare cosi, e non rimpiango alcuna scelta fatta!
Come è nata l´idea di collaborare al famoso film “Rockstar” nel quale canti in 8 brani, usando lo pseudonimo di “Mikey Steel”? Abbiamo letto che eri in contatto con un famoso produttore che ti propose di collaborare come cantante, è tutto vero? (Milijenko Matijevic): si, il produttore era Tom Werman, e mi chiamò per chiedermi di prenderne parte se fossi stato interessato ad un´audizione. Allora partii dalle Canarie a Los Angeles per mettere insieme una band, e lui mi chiamò quella stessa notte, fu veramente alquanto strano, e mentre stavo per partire, intorno alle 10.30 del mattino, soltanto tre ore dopo, all´incirca verso le 13.00, mi informò che la risposta era “Si”! Quindi fu fantastico, veramente tutto molto rapido. Yeah, fu una gran bella esperienza. Ebbi l´occasione di incontrare altri cantanti che conoscevo già da molti anni, come Jeff Scott Soto e altri fantastici musicisti. Jeff suonò sul mio secondo album, quindi l´avevo incontrato già diverse volte molto tempo prima!
Sono sicuro che questa esperienza ti ha lasciato bellissimi ricordi. Come ti sei sentito a cantare per un film senza esserne l´attore per il quale hai invece interpretato la voce? Non è un po´ strano?
(Milijenko Matijevic): mi sono sentito assai a mio agio, direi bene, quello che è successo in realtà è che io rappresentavo l´anima dell´attore, e quindi era lui a recitare di conseguenza la mia parte, e non il contrario (ride).
Dunque, hai avuto l´occasione di incontrare il protagonista, Mark Wahlberg, per il quale hai cantato diverse parti?
(Milijenko Matijevic): si, naturalmente, mentre stavano girando il film, abbiamo avuto l´occasione di berci qualcosa insieme e di parlare in tutta tranquillità.
Adesso ho una domanda strana da farti. Hai mai pensato, se tu avessi avuto la possibilità di recitare il suo stesso ruolo di protagonista nel film, se avresti interpretato meglio quel ruolo di Mark Wahlberg?
(Milijenko Matijevic): oh onestamente non lo so, non credo, ma sinceramente vorrei recitare in futuro (ride)! Potrebbe essere assai divertente e carino, penso che dovrei recitare, si. Vorrei provare, penso lo potrei fare!
Diversi anni fa, abbiamo saputo di una tua collaborazione con alcuni ex componenti dei Guns´n´Roses: Slash, Duff McKagan e Matt Sorum. Ci puoi raccontare qualcosa a riguardo?
(Milijenko Matijevic): si, in quel periodo loro stavano cercando un cantante, ricordo che fu quando stavano formando i Velvet Revolver. Feci un´audizione con loro, suonammo 4/5 canzoni. Sfortunatamente poi non ho più sentito Slash per molto tempo, solo qualche volta mi è capitato di incontrarlo in studio.
Mili, siamo quasi giunti al termine di questa interessante e simpatica intervista: ho le ultime due domande per te! La prima: hai qualche progetto futuro o collaborazione nel quale sei coinvolto in questo momento? Un nuovo album degli Steelheart?
(Milijenko Matijevic): in questo periodo sto lavorando a un progetto ABM, oltre a un progetto rock e ovviamente ho anche gli show acustici in giro per il mondo. Riguardo a un nuovo album, ci sto lavorando, ma non sono ancora sicuro se sarà un disco degli Steelheart, probabilmente potrebbe essere un album solista. Ma potete stare certi che continuerò a suonare con gli Steelheart per tutto il prossimo anno: suoneremo in Corea, ed in altri importanti festival. Stiamo provando a tornare anche qui in Italia, ma il principale problema riguarda il budget, ed in questo periodo di crisi è alquanto basso: non ci sono molti soldi in giro e di conseguenza per noi musicisti è assai difficile suonare in ogni paese come abbiamo fatto per tanti anni fino ad oggi. Ma spero che qualcosa cambierà e che potremmo farlo per tutti i nostri numerosissimi fan!
Prima di quest´ultima domanda vorrei personalmente ringraziarti per la pazienza e il tempo che ci hai offerto con questa divertente chiacchierata. Vuoi lasciare un messaggio speciale ai fan italiani che continuano a supportare la tua musica in questi anni?
(Milijenko Matijevic): vi adoro ragazzi! in questi ultimi giorni ho visitato Roma, una bellissima città, unica in tutto il globo per la sua bellezza, e ieri sera ho assaggiato il miglior cibo che non mangiavo da parecchio tempo, ragazzi (ride): ho provato “Linguine allo Scoglio”, un fantastico piatto di pesce, il mio preferito! E´ stato fantastico, e anche questa sera, dove ognuno di voi mi ha manifestato cosi tanto affetto e gentilezza. Quindi, vorrei ringraziarvi, e vi auguro tutto il bene possibile!

In a starry night of the early June, the new season of the TIVOLIROCK´s summer festival starts under a good star, in every sense: after the past editions that have seen to perform international artist like Richie Kotzen (The Winery Dogs, ex Poison and Mr. Big) in the summer of 2013, and Kee Marcello (ex Europe) in the last year, now it´s the time to enjoy another one, Milijenko “Michael” Matijevic, the amazing frontman of the ´80s band Steelheart, and also one of the main voices of the soundtrack of the movie “Rockstar” (2001). This time the location of the event is located in a village just outside Rome, in a private villa, set in the Roman countryside. Despite some technical problems happened during his performance, the voice and the charisma of this singer have involved all the fans, arrived for this unrepeatable occasion, to see alive and salute personally him after the show. Although they weren´t played a lot of classic songs of his beginning of career with the band, such as “Everybody Loves Eileen”, “She´s Gone” or “Mama Don´t You Cry” and so on, this acoustic concert has reserved us some very special and unforgettable moments to share with Michael: he has showed us that he is still able to sing not only in the high notes but also in a different way, reinterpreting each song in a modern and fresh way, both with guitar and voice. After his performance, short but intense, in which he played mainly songs of his last period (“Buried Unkind”, “Twisted Future”, “Electric Chair”) but without forgetting a couple of hits (“I´ll Never Let You Go”, and the final “We All Die Young”) he was open to sign autographs and take pictures with the fans: and also he has proved to be a nice and affable person when he is granted himself to do an interview with us of Vero Rock Italia! During his dinner we´ve talked about his musical influences, his relation with his ex band mates, his future projects, his collaborations with other great musicians, and many more!Thanks again to the Erocks Production to have organized another great concert with a very special guest, hoping that they can still bring other famous artists as soon as possible in the eternal city.

Hi Michael, I´m Raffaele of Vero Rock Italia! First of all I would like to thank You for the precious time You´ve given us for this chat, despite your tiredness. Which are your expectations from this European tour?
(Milijenko Matijevic): hi Raffaele, to be honest, I´ve not any particular expectations from this imminent tour: for me these are special moments to share with my fans, to meet new friends, more people. So in this sense I don´t expect anything, I just expect what it happens! So far from home it´s a really pleasure to find some kindness, some love from each one of you at every concert, and these things give me a good energy.
Talking about your musical influences, which are the bands and the artists that have deeply inspired your way to sing and play since your debut till now?
(Milijenko Matijevic): well, definitly I would say Led Zeppelin, the most…Yeah, I grew up with them: after them I usually listen to Pink Floyd, Bad Company, Van Halen and many more!
Could You tell us which is the funniest thing that happened in your long career? A particular funny mo-ment that You want to remind and share with us?
(Milijenko Matijevic): You know, there are a lot of funny things that happened to me (laughs), but in particular way there´s a special one: me and the other guys of Steelheart, in the early ´90s, we were playing in Chicago and we were filming “Everybody Loves Eileen”´s videoclip during a major show in a theater, and I´ve got my swept leather pants and I´ll never forget that, during I was screaming in the middle of the song´s refrain, my all pants have ripped and I´ve had only underwear. So the girls, in the front crowd, they were without words, they didn´t think this unexpected surprise…so… Rock ´n´ Roll(laughs)!
Sadly We´ve learned that John Fowler, the former drummer and one of the original members of Steelheart, died in 2008. So, if is possible, how You want to remind him, after he´s passed away?
(Milijenko Matijevic): I would say that John was always happy, since I met him for the first time till the day before he died. I remind him always happy and smiling, no matter what it would happen, and there´s how I remember him. I was still in contact with him before he died. I definitly played my solo record to him, on which I was working on: we were outside a park listening it in a car, and then, I think he died only a couple of weeks after. Terrible!
I´m so sorry for this sad episode. And what about your relation with the others ex band mates? Are You still in contact with James Ward and Frank DiCostanzo?
(Milijenko Matijevic): I´ve met sometimes Frank, he´s a good guy, while I´ve never talked anymore with Jimi, he´s taken a different road…since we´ve toured and collaborated sometimes in the past years.
About that terrible accident that You´ve had in Denver, Colorado, the Halloween night of 1992, during the tour, when an heavy lighting truss hit on the back of the your head: after that episode, an year after your rehabilitation, You´ve decided to continue with new musicians using the same name “Steelheart”, but with a different musical direction compared to the first two records. In your opinion, if that ugly accident wouldn´t have happened, do you think You would have continue maybe with the first line up too, with the same style or You´d still chosen this new kind of sonority?
(Milijenko Matijevic): well, it´s sad to remind that horrible accident that happened to me more than 20 years ago, but, You know, this is the life, and we often have to accept what life holds for us, both goods and bad things. I don´t think that my accident was related to my personal choice to form a new band, playing different music: I mean, in that time the music world was changing, and new styles like Grunge or Alternative Rock were fashionable. So, who can say what would have happened? I believe in the fate, probably it had to go in this way, and I do not regret any choice that I´ve done!
How was born the idea to take part to the famous movie “Rockstar” in which You sang in 8 tracks, with the pseudonym of “Mikey Steel”? We read that You were in contact with a famous producer that proposed You to collaborate as a singer, is it true?
(Milijenko Matijevic): yes, the producer was Tom Werman, and he called me and he asked me to come in if I´ve been interested for an audition. Then I came from the Canary to Los Angeles to put a band together, and he call me that night, it was so weird, and when I flew, about 10.30 a. m., only three hours after, at 1 o´ clock, he informed me that the answer was “Yes”! So it was brilliant, really fast. Yeah, it was a great experience. I´ve met other singers that I knew since many years before, like Jeff Scott Soto and other amazing musicians. Jeff sang on my second record, so I met him a lot of time before!
I´m sure this experience have left to You great memories. So how do You feel to sing for a movie without being the actor for which You sang the parts? Is It strange?
(Milijenko Matijevic): I definitly felt fine, I felt good, and what it happened was that I was the actor´s soul, and so he had to act me, and not the contrary (laughs).
So, did You have the chance to meet the main actor, Mark Wahlberg, for which You´ve sang the vocal parts?
(Milijenko Matijevic): yes, of course, during the making of movie, we had the occasion to drink something together and talk safely.
Now I´ve a strange question for You. Have you ever thought if You had been able to have the possibility to play that main role in the movie, do You think You´ve played better than Mark Wahlberg?
(Milijenko Matijevic): oh I really don´t know, but I don´t think so, but I definitly wanna act in the coming future (laughs)! It could be funny and good, I think I should act, yes. I wanna try, I think I can do it!
Several years ago, we´ve heard about a sort of collaboration with ex Guns ´n´ Roses members: Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. Could You tell us something about it?
(Milijenko Matijevic): yes, in that period they were looking for a singer, I remember it was when they were forming Velvet Revolver. I did an audition with them, playing 4/5 songs. Unfortunately I haven´t talked with Slash for a long time, just sometimes I´ve met him in a studio.
Mili, we are arriving near the end of this interesting and nice interview: I´ve got the two last questions for You! The first one: have You any future projects or collaborations in which You´re involved in this mo-ment? A new Steelheart´s album?
(Milijenko Matijevic): in this period I´m working on an ABM´s project, also on a rock project and of course the acoustic shows around the world. About a new album, I´m working on it, but I´m not sure if it will be a Steelheart´s album, probably It could be a solo album. But You can be sure that I will continue playing with Steelheart for all the next year: we will play in Corea, and in others important festival. We´re trying to come back here in Italy, but the main problem is about the budget, and in this crisis period it is so low: there´s not much money around and so for us musicians is very hard to play in every country like we´ve done for many years till now. But I hope that something is gonna change and we could realize this for all our several fans!
Before this last question I would personally to thank You for the patience and the time You´ve dedicated to us with this funny chat. Would You send a special message to the Italian fans that continue to support your music in this years?
(Milijenko Matijevic): I love You guys! In these last days I´ve visited Rome, a wonderful city, unique in all the world for its beauty, and yesterday evening I´ve eaten the best food that I didn´t eat since a long time, man (laughs): I´ve tried “Linguine allo Scoglio”, an amazing fish dish, my favourite one! It was fantastic, and also this evening, where everyone of You have showed affection and kindness to me. So, I would like to thank You, and I wish You all the wellness!
