Ci sono occasioni nella vita in cui non è mai facile riuscire a sfuggire alla banalità e all’ovvietà dei quesiti da porre quando si è al cospetto di artisti di fama internazionale del calibro di Steve Lukather (chitarrista, leader e co-fondatore dei Toto) e di Joseph Williams (cantante e membro storico della band californiana). Nel momento in cui si è concretizzata questa imperdibile occasione, lo ammetto, mi tremavano le mani e il battito del mio cuore andava fortissimo. Eppure, nonostante il compito difficile ed impegnativo previsto, il nostro incontro online con Luke e Joe è stato a dir poco fantastico e ricco di argomenti interessanti che i nostri due ospiti, in esclusiva per VeroRock.it, hanno sapientemente raccontato, con quel tocco di simpatia ed ironia che da sempre li contraddistingue, ma soprattutto con tanta serenità e spontaneità!

Nei giorni di Martedì 3 Novembre e Mercoledì 4 Novembre, abbiamo affrontato con Luke e Joe le tematiche relative alle principali novità che li stanno coinvolgendo oramai da diversi mesi: dall’uscita, il prossimo 26 Febbraio 2021, dei loro rispettivi album solisti ‘I Fond The Sun Again’ (Lukather) e ‘Denizen Tenant’ (Williams) per la The Players Club/Mascot Label Groups, al nuovo ritorno sulle scene con una formazione rinnovata dei Toto, il cui debutto mondiale è previsto per un concerto in live streaming Sabato prossimo 21 Novembre!
Molti dunque gli argomenti affrontati con i due celebri artisti, che si sono rivelati veramente molto socievoli, disponibili ed attenti alle domande poste dal sottoscritto. Dalle loro diverse risposte è emerso certamente il loro lungo e rinnovato sodalizio artistico, frutto di una lunga amicizia, che li ha visti, anche in questa occasione, collaborare ai rispettivi lavori solisti.

Inoltre, nonostante le recenti questioni legali relative alle diatribe con alcuni ex componenti della band californiana, Luke e Joe non si sono certo persi d’animo e sono riusciti, grazie anche al supporto spirituale ed artistico dell’amico e co-fondatore David Paich, a tornare alla grande sulle scene con questa live premiere ed un tour mondiale denominato “DOGZ OF OZ TOUR WORLDWIDE” che li vedrà suonare negli USA, in Europa, Aystralia, Asia e Nuova Zelanda! Abbiamo anche affrontato assieme gli argomenti relativi all’attuale difficile periodo dovuto alla pandemia di covid-19, al loro rapporto con le tecnologie e ad alcune loro importanti collaborazioni musicali durante il corso delle rispettive carriere. Infine i due artisti hanno voluto condividere assieme a noi il ricordo di alcuni loro compagni di avventure scomparsi in tempi recenti o già da molti anni: Eddie Van Halen, Jeff e Mike Porcaro, Fergie Frederiksen.

Lasciamo così la “parola” ai nostri due fantastici ospiti, senza prima aver però ringraziato il loro management, in particolare Steve Karas e Keith Hagan della SKH Music Agency, che si sono rivelati disponibili, cordiali, premurosi ed altamente collaborativi con il sottoscritto: senza il loro supporto tutto ciò non sarebbe stato possibile!

Salve Luke & Joe, innanzitutto grazie molte per il tempo prezioso che ci state concedendo, è un vero onore per me avere la possibilità di intervistarvi e benvenuti su VeroRock.it! Iniziamo quindi con la prima domanda: come stanno andando le prove per l’imminente live streaming premiere con la nuova lineup dei Toto, prevista per Sabato 21 Novembre?

(Luke): alla grande e semplicemente incredibile! Mi mancava veramente suonare assieme a questi “snarky puppies guys”, questi musicisti sono di un altro livello, capisci cosa intendo? Specialmente suonare con govani e talentuosi musicisti come questi, che spingono veramente! Sai, ho 63 anni ed è ovvio che non riesco a vivere e ad avere la loro stessa energia, ma come sai mi piace ancora molto suonare, passione che forse si era un po sopita negli ultimi anni ti dirò. L’ultima versione dei Toto per me è finita, non ne ero particolarmente entusiata, ma a distanza di un anno e dopo aver combattuto una battaglia legale, con relativo dispendio di soldi ed energie, ho pensato “perché non posso semplicemente continuare con David Paich come Toto e riavere i miei soldi indietro?”. Sono perfettamente consapevole che queste situazioni non sono buone per nessuno, per i fan e per tutte le persone coinvolte, ma anche io ho una vita e una famiglia – due ex mogli e quattro figli – e una reputazione da difendere. Vivo a Los Angeles e dall’Ottobre scorso sono abbastanza stufo di questa situazione che si è andata creando. Ma alla fine l’unica cosa che voglio adesso è riavere quanto mi spetta e rilassarmi, condividendo altri bei momenti con i fan di tutto il mondo e continuare a vivere come se avessi ancora 17 anni, on the road again! Ho messo assieme una nuova band con alcuni amici di vecchia data e alcuni nuovi e veramente talentuosi ragazzi, dove ciascuno di noi è felice. Voglio dire che suonare con gente del calibro di John (Pierce), Robert (Searight), Steve (Maggiora), Dominique (Taplin) e Warren (Ham) è semplicemente fantastico ed appagante, soprattutto per il loro approccio e background variegato: dal rock’n’roll al funky e così via! Come ben saprai tutta la mia vita è dedicata alla musica e per fortuna ho un’altra fresca esperienza da condividere assieme a musicisti incredibili e non con pensionati o musicisti con pochi stimoli! Veramente, non mi interessa vivere esclusivamente per i soldi della gente, non mi reputo una persona avida. Ho già molte date confermate per il prossimo anno sia con la All-Starr Band di Ringo (Starr) e con i “nuovi” Toto, in diversi festival europei, quindi puoi giurarci, vi farà impazzire!
Purtroppo mi manca molto suonare con alcuni vecchi amici come Jeff Porcaro ma, credimi, il nuovo batterista e il nuovo bassista (John Pierce) sono veramente eccezionali e sanno bene il fatto loro!

(Joe): bene, non abbiamo però fatto solo le prove con la nuova formazione in queste settimane, bensì abbiamo anche suonato l’intero show e registrato alcune scene dal vivo per l’imminente live streaming premiere, sarà un’esperienza incredibile! Sono certo che sia i vecchi che i nuovi fan dei Toto saranno veramente colpiti dalla qualità di questo imminente evento, per la setlist proposta e ovviamente per i fantastici musicisti coinvolti in questa nuova fresca ed accattivante avventura della band, quindi seguiteci, non ve ne pentirete!

Steve, veramente, per me è un grande piacere poter intervistare uno dei miei artisti preferiti in assoluto, ancora ricordo la prima volta che ti vidi dal vivo con i Toto, durante il ‘Falling In Between World Tour’ a Roma molti anni fa! Sai che abbiamo anche un’altra cosa in comune? Siamo nati entrambi il 21 Ottobre, solo che io esattamente trent’anni prima di te!

(Luke): grazie mille amico mio, apprezzo veramente le tue parole sincere e si, ricordo bene quella sera d’estate a Roma dove suonammo con i Toto, mi sembra fosse nel 2006 se ricordo bene! E sul serio siamo nati entrambi lo stesso giorno? Che piacere, siamo entrambi bilancia! Allora, visto che non è passato molto tempo dal nostro compleanno ti auguro, anche se con leggero ritardo, tanti cari auguri di buon compleanno fratello!

Riguardo questa nuova avventura targata Toto, com’è nata la decisione di tornare in pista con questa nuova formazione dopo l’indimenticabile tour celebrativo del 40ennale conclusosi l’anno scorso?

(Luke): oh molto semplice! Joseph (Williams) ha lavorato al suo album solista, ed io anche al mio entrambi per la stessa etichetta (la Mascot Records – n. d. r.), lavorando entrambi assieme all’album di ciascuno, così come David Paich ha anche collaborato con noi su alcuni brani e no, certo, non è un nuovo progetto dei toto ma è la cosa che più si avvicina ad esso penso. Così abbiamo deciso di promuovere assieme questi album solisti con un’anteprima in live streaming prevista per il prossimo 21 Novembre, ed entrambi abbiamo pensato “Dobbiamo andare in tour! Perché dovremmo farlo separatamente?” Possiamo farlo assieme come ai vecchi tempi. E Paich aggiunse “e potete anche usare il nome della band e suonare i nostri brani”. Così risposi “bene, non c’è alcuna ragione per la quale non posso suonare la musica di tutta la mia carriera” (come sai compongo moltissimo) ma al contempo volevo solo stare lontano da altri problemi finanziari e legali. Veramente non capisco perché alcune persone odiano me e Dave, accusandomi di aver sottratto illecitamente soldi dalla band. Ma alla fine posso solo consigliare a queste persone di trovarsi un buon hobby, perché sono veramente seccato da questa sgradevole situazione per tutti. Ad ogni modo, peace & love!

Parlando ora dell’imminente anteprima live: quali sono le vostre aspettative? E cosa devono aspettarsi i fan da questo inatteso ritorno in scena? Qualche news interessante riguardo la setlist preparata? Qualche ospite atteso?

(Luke): beh ti risponderò molto semplicemente! Ogni volta c’è stato un cambio nella band, che si è sempre riflesso sugli animi dei fan e dei curiosi: alcuni sono felici, altri meno. Penso solo che prima bisogna vedere per poi giudicare! Adesso c’è un approccio molto più rock’n’roll nel senso della potenza sprigionata, perchè ci sono molti suoni dinamici ma suoniamo ancora i grandi successi che abbiamo scritto, solo suonati nel migliore dei modi possibile, ad esempio con voci assurde e moltre altre cose. E un’altra cosa fantastica e strana allo stesso tempo per me è che ogni volta che mi giro sul palco vedo ognuno sorridere ed è veramente bello per un cambiamento drastico come questo! E ad ogni modo, quando ti trovi assieme a questi ragazzi per due settimane mi immagino già di vedermi assieme a queste persone per altri 70 e passa anni, sempre se loro ci saranno! Inoltre ho imparato molto da loro, perché sono veramente dei musicisti fantastici. Riguardo alla premiere imminente, non sono previsti ospiti, a meno che qualcuno in città non voglia venire per una jam, per me va bene (ride), o magari se ci sarà qualche ospite in un’altra occasione speciale, certamente sarà possibile, ma non posso predirlo adesso! Ad ogni modo questa è analcolica (mi mostra una bottiglia di birra analcolica – n. d. r.) ma devi capire che sono sveglio dalle 6 di mattina (ridiamo assieme) e sto avendo giornate intense!

(Joe): bene, naturalmente tutti voi avete molte aspettative su come sarà questa nuova lineup della band, e certamente ci saranno molte interessanti novità relative alla setlist preparata per questo show, perché io e Luke suoneremo alcuni brani dai nostri album solisti di prossima uscita, il che è diverso da qualsiasi altra setlist dei Toto sino ad oggi. Come ti dissi prima, adesso ogni fan potrà ascoltare nuovi ma esperti musicisti, come diceva anche Luke, suonare ed approcciarsi con i nostri vecchi brani dei Toto e anche, allo stesso tempo, con il nostro nuovo materiale che costituisce una vera e sincera collaborazione tra amici, innanzitutto, e tra collaboratori di lungo corso e compagni di squadra. Inoltre sia io che Luke, abbiamo diversi album solisti alle spalle e certamente potremmo anche proporre alcuni estratti storici da essi, sicuramente lo faremo nel prossimo tour mondiale!

Steve, in questi giorni tutti I mass media sono concentrati principalmente sulle elezioni americane. Scusami per la domanda: sei già andato a votare?

(Luke): non ora, ho già votato due settimane fa. Adesso sono a casa mia come puoi vedere e sono molto impegnato in questi giorni. Riguardo queste elezioni non voglio dire nulla, perché potrei portare sfortuna. Voglio veramente tornare sul palco di nuovo ed incontrare gente di tutto il mondo. Ed è una vera vergogna, io non vivo come loro (i politici – n. d. r.), non capisco la logica, i giochi, la stupida mentalità di una parte irrispettosa di loro. E’ una bella schifezza il periodo che stiamo vivendo da diversi mesi, e abbiamo tutti bisogno di riaccendere la luce e fuggire dall’oscurità. Non penso di aver visto in tutta la mia vita una schifezza simile…la musica aiuta, ecco perché suono!
Personalmente penso che la musica relazionata ai problemi politici (come ad esempio fanno Bruce Springsteen o Bono Vox) non è appagante per me, rispetto il loro punto di vista ma penso che, come musicista, ho solo il ruolo di intrattenere e suonare per le persone che amano la mia musica, quindi lasciamo la musica fuori dalla politica! Credimi, mi reputo una persona veramente spirituale e preferisco non parlare di questi problemi politici, bensì più dei Dogz (of Oz).

In una foto recente delle vostre prove per l’imminente evento, pubblicata sulla pagina ufficiale Facebook dei Toto, ho visto presente anche il vostro amico e compagno di lungo corso David Paich. C’è per caso qualche possibilità di un possibile suo coinvolgimento sia per questo evento e sia per altre occasioni live o per un tour? Come sono adesso le sue condizioni di salute?

(Luke): yeah, ma certo, anche se David (Paich) è il nostro direttore d’orchestra. Ma certamente potrà sempre salire sul palco e suonare alcuni brani storici con noi, ovvio, lo potrà sempre fare! Purtroppo ha avuto alcuni problemi di salute, ha 65 anni e negli ultimi tempi ha avuto diversi interventi e criticità. Così adesso deve prima risolvere questi problemi di salute ma sarà sempre parte integrante dei Toto, ha fatto la storia dei Toto, sia come musicista e anche come compositore! David è ancora parte del progetto, anche se come un partner “silenzioso” per il momento. Riguardo il resto dei Toto, i miei ex compagni, preferisco non parlare di loro. Voglio dire, Lenny (Castro) e Shannon (Forrest), li adoro, ma non continueranno con noi, è una loro scelta e la rispetto. Ma resteremo sempre amici certamente, parlo sempre con Lenny e seguo con attenzione i suoi progetti musicali nei quali è coinvolto. Alcuni dicono che li ho licenziati io dalla band, ma non è la verità, è una storia ben diversa. Ma questo ovviamente è solo il mio pensiero, quindi ognuno può scegliere a cosa vuole credere!

Penso che mi hai già risposto prima, Luke, ma ad ogni modo, riguardo l’altro membro storico e tuo ex compagno Steve Porcaro: sei ancora in contatto con lui? Nessuna eventuale possibilità di poterlo rivedere nuovamente dal vivo con voi per un’apparizione o alcuni brani?

(Luke): assolutamente no. Ho provato a parlare con Steve diverso tempo fa, ma penso che mi odia, odia la band e forse anche la vita penso. Forse vuole solo fare le sue cose, nessun problema per me. Come posso spiegare e sintetizzare questo concetto? Forse un matrimonio andato veramente male dopo 45 anni di convivenza? Non gli auguro assolutamente alcun male, spero veramente che potrà avere successo, salute e felicità e tutte le cose belle della vita.

Sempre in queste ultime settimane avete anche annunciato il “DOGZ OF OZ TOUR WORLDWIDE”, un tour mondiale che vi vedrà esibirvi in Nord America, Europa, Asia, Australia/Nuova Zelanda. Cosa potete dirci riguardo la setlist e i brani che suonerete? Verrete a trovarci anche in Italia?

(Joe): oh, sarà prevalentemente la stessa scaletta già preparata per questo imminente evento in streaming, ma quando saremo in tour probabilmente ne eseguiremo anche qualcun altro. Questo perché penso che quando usciremo di qui e torneremo in tour lo show sarà più lungo, quindi probabilmente avremo la possibilità di eseguire alcuni brani tratti dai nostri rispettivi lavori solisti e, ovviamente, anche più brani dei Toto. Ma nel frattempo, proporremo a tutti i nostri fan molti altri contenuti musicali sui nostri siti, così mentre aspetteremo la fine di questa pandemia, sicuramente troverete altre news interessanti sulle nostre piattaforme online!

(Luke): si, spero veramente di ritornare presto on the road con la nuova band, in giro per il mondo come sempre, appena saremo liberi da questa prigione! Stai scehrzando? L’Italia è veramente uno dei miei posti preferiti al mondo, voglio andare in vacanza con la mia ragazza anche in Toscana e a Sorrento, avete tutte le bellezze li, come Capri. Ho passato alcune vacanze già in passato nel sud Italia! Riguardo la scaletta per il prossimo tour, suoneremo certamente tutti i brani dei Toto che abbiamo suonato in passato ma con questi nuovi fantastici musicisti, così la gente potrà testare come suonano i vecchi brani con questa band! Ma suoneremo anche alcune cose del nostro repertorio solista, così sarà ancor più interessante rispetto a prima a mio modesto parare! E sarà tutto vero, ancora un’altra volta così potrete filmare il tutto con questi (mi mostra il suo cellulare – n. d. r.). Ma ad ogni modo, so che alcuni fan desiderano che io rimetta in piedi la vecchia formazione ma non posso farlo. Non posso pregare ciascuno, soprattutto chi mi odia, non mi interessa farlo più, non mi taglio le vene perché non mi odio, capisci cosa intendo dire? Attualmente sono felice e sto facendo del mio meglio, solo questo! Mi dispiace che alcuni non lo capiscano, quindi suggerisco loro di “non venire a sentirci” se non approvi il mio modo di pensare, semplicemente cambiate canale se non vi piace quello che state vedendo! Mi dispiace se qualcuno di loro non concorda con me, ma ho il diritto di farlo quindi, riguarda solo la mia vita non solo come musicista ma principalmente come essere umano!

Riguardo questa nuova lineup dei Toto, a parte il tuo amico e compagno di avventure Joe Williams, puoi brevemente introdurci l’ensemble dei musicisti che prenderà parte a questo tour, Luke?

(Luke): yeah, ognuno dei ragazzi è fantastic, e ci stiamo divertendo un sacco assieme, e ciascuno di loro proviene da posti differenti, sai? Ad esempio il batterista “Sput” (Robert Searight) viene dagli Snarky Puppy e ha suonato con Snoop Dogg per circa dieci anni ed è un incredibile batterista rock’n’roll e funk. Inoltre canta anche ed è molto divertente e simpatico anche come persona. Molto meglio che con i miei ex compagni di prima, sul serio! Cos’altro posso dire? Li adoro tutti!

Allora, come succede per ogni nuovo inizio che si rispetti, possiamo aspettarci anche un future nuovo disco dei Toto nei prossimi anni? State per caso lavorando a qualche nuovo brano?

(Luke): no, no assolutamente no, non accadrà! Voglio dire soprattutto per questi problemi legali, ma credo che quello che potremmo fare in generale non sarà più lo stesso. Ho il mio album solista in uscita così come Joe, quindi, ricordi cosa successe con Peter Gabriel quando lasciò i Genesis? Fece uno dei dischi più belli di chiunque altro, ed è stato lui che ha controllato il tutto dall’inizio alla fine. Quindi tutti coloro che sono stati coinvolti in anni passati come Leland Sklar o Simon Phillips, sono ancora miei amici e probabilmente potrebbero essere coinvolti nei nostri progetti solisti. Alcune persone pensano che non siamo più amici ma non è così, Simon ha lasciato la band per proseguire nella sua carriera da solista, quando Dave (Paich) e Steve (Porcaro) rientrarono nella band: il business è cambiato, molte cose anche sono cambiate nel corso del tempo. Simon voleva avere la sua band, lo capisco, ed è buono per lui, lo rispetto, perché è il “suo modo di essere” ed è una cosa importante! Forse voleva suonare nuova musica e non solo i vecchi brani dei Toto, come ha fatto invece per circa venti anni. Amo tantissimo la sua musica!

Il prossimo 12 Novembre, sarà annunciata anche l’uscita di entrambi I vostri lavori solisti, che saranno pubblicati il prossimo 26 Febbraio per la The Players Club / Mascot Label Group. Da cosa è nata questa scelta di pubblicarli entrambi lo stesso giorno? E’ solo una coincidenza o c’è una ragione precisa?

(Joe): originariamente abbiamo composto i nostri dischi completamente indipendenti l’uno dall’altro, ma li abbiamo terminati entrambi quasi in contemporanea e, ovviamente, dal momento che Luke ha suonato sul mio album e io ho cantato su quasi tutto il suo, abbiamo provato i nostri demo assieme e ci sembrava quasi che suonassero un po come un album dei Toto. Così abbiamo deciso che avremmo realizzato questi due dischi contemporaneamente e, poiché facciamo entrambi parte della stessa casa discografica (la Mascot Label Group – n. d. r.) aveva senso farlo. Così eccoti spiegata la ragione del perché abbiamo deciso di fare uscire i nostri album allo stesso tempo!

(Luke): dobbiamo stare attenti nel diffondere questa news (ride) perché è ancora un piccolo segreto! E’ stata veramente una collaborazione importante per me, condividere ancora una volta nuova musica e nuove composizioni assieme a Joe. Ha scritto alcuni brani sensazionali, io ho suonato su di un pezzo del suo album solista ed è stato veramente fantastico perché abbiamo mostrato vicendevolmente il nostro lato diverso come musicisti ed anche come veri amici. Ho percepito una bellissima atmosfera, mi ha ricordato molto il periodo di ‘Kingdom of Desire’, indietro negli anni. E inoltre abbiamo suonato assieme per questa premiere mondiale diversi brani storici dei Toto, non tutti naturalmente, ma sai, è totalmente diverso quando ti siedi assieme per comporre nuova musica rispetto a quando devi invece girare le riprese per un evento in streaming: in quest’ultimo caso devi stare molto attento e concentrato per la qualità dello show e del prodotto finale.

Concentrandoci adesso sul tuo nuovo album intitolato ‘I Found The Sun Again’, innanzitutto sono rimasto veramente molto colpito dalla scelta del titolo, soprattutto per il triste periodo che stiamo vivendo in tutto il mondo. C’è per caso qualche relazione tra questo titolo di speranza e l’attuale situazione pandemica?

(Luke): beh, onestamente ho scritto il titolo dell’album per la mia ragazza. Jeff Babko e Joe invece mi hanno aiutato nel trovare il testo giusto per esprimere I sentimenti che provavo. Ma naturalmente il titolo come la maggior parte della musica sono mie, così come la melodia e cose simili. E’ probabilmente l’unica canzone in tutto l’album che è più simile alle sonorità dei Toto, perché tutto il resto prende un’altra direzione musicale, ma è sempre parte di me. Sai, “I Found The Sun Again” è semplicemente una bella canzone dedicate ad una bellissima donna. Nel periodo in cui la scrissi ero miserabilmente depresso, fottuto emozionalmente parlando, una venerdì sera guardando la TV da solo, mi sentivo come se stessi perdendo la bussola, poi ho visto le foto dei miei ragazzi, riflettendo su cosa potessero pensare di me in quel momento, “papà non è così figo, è vecchio” (ride), così ho provato a sentirmi meglio e ad uscire fuori, perché in fin dei conti mi considero veramente una persona fortunata!

Concentrandoci invece adesso sul tuo nuovo disco intitolato ‘Denizen Tenant’, Joe, prima di tutto qual è esattamente il significato del titolo? Qual è la storia dietro di questo particolare titolo?

(Joe): allora, le due parole basilarmente significano che “sei un occupante/inquilino del tuo paese” o ad esempio “sei un abitante dell’Italia” e “sei anche un inquilino della tua casa”. Così queste parole significano in fin dei conti la stessa cosa se ci rifletti. Il significato di ‘Denizen Tenant’ è come un gatto che è selvaggio ma che quando entra a casa tua decide che quello è il suo posto! Quindi un’altra descrizione per questo titolo può essere “una persona che va ad un tuo party e non se ne va più”! Lo so, è una spiegazione molto metaforica ma questo è quanto, non c’è nessun altro significato particolare relativamente al titolo dell’album, che tu ci creda o meno!

Riguardo questa triste situazione dovuta alla pandemia, come avete passato la maggior parte delle vostre vite durante questi mesi così difficili? State eventualmente pensando alla possibilità di suonare altri eventi in streaming durante l’anno prossimo se la situazione non dovesse risolversi così facilmente?

(Luke): no, perchè alla fine penso che un evento in streaming può essere la soluzione solo per un tempo circoscritto, ma non è la stessa esperienza di un concerto dal vivo. E’ fantastico, perché hai l’opportunità di vedere i musicisti esibirsi senza il movimento o il rumore della gente, mentre per me questo evento in streaming è una prova ulteriore, ma non è la stessa cosa quando ti trovi di fronte alla gente ogni sera, e hai da offrirgli un gran bello show senza nessuna défaillance. Voglio veramente uscire al più presto da questa triste e difficile situazione, voglio tornare in giro on the road nuovamente con Joe e gli altri ragazzi, non posso aspettare! Come dicevo, questa del 21 Novembre è la nostra prima performance in assoluto quindi dovrete tenerla bene a mente e gustarvela, perché quando torneremo dal vivo, spero veramente presto, sarà totalmente differente, sicuro! Sarà una figata per le persone che ci vanno a nozze!

(Joe): sono sicuro che probabilmente penseremo anche all’eventuale possibilità di altri eventi in streaming ovviamente se la situazione non dovesse risolversi così facilmente, so che probabilmente ci vorrà tempo ma alla fine sono certo che torneremo presto on the road per i concerti. Sai, prima o poi, sono sicuro che ci sarà una qualche risposta e rimedio a tutta questa situazione del virus e, naturalmente, la gente tornerà a vedere i concerti dal vivo. Nel frattempo, continueremo a creare contenuti multimediali per il sito e ovviamente potremmo pensare anche ad eventuali altri live streaming, solo se sarà necessario, ma penso che ci sono ad oggi buone possibilità di ritornare in giro e, speriamo, possa essere nel 2021! Ad oggi abbiamo già diverse date confermate, e sono molto convinto che torneremo on stage per l’anno prossimo!

Steve, ho veramente gradito il tuo primo singolo e videoclip pubblicato alcuni mesi fa, “Run To Me”, scritto assieme a David Paich e Joe Williams che vede inoltre la partecipazione del tuo amico Ringo Starr. Com’è nato questo brano? Qual è – sempre se c’è – il significato dietro il testo?

(Luke): yeah, è stato divertente, tutto è nato per celebrare l’ottantesimo compleanno di Ringo e così abbiamo deciso di fare un video con lui e ci abbiamo suonato, è uno dei miei migliori amici. E allora abbiamo poi composto anche un altro brano per il mio imminente album solista. Spero sarà incluso anche questo pezzo nel disco, ma ad ogni modo, comunque sia, sono felice di aver composto questo brano per Ringo! E’ stato veramente uno spasso e gli è piaciuto molto essere stato coinvolto ed essersi messo in gioco per la clip, assolutamente! Abbiamo scritto il testo con Joe e Ringo era incredibilmente entusiasta di questo brano carino. Man, lavorare con lui (Ringo) è una gioia immensa per me, e lui lo apprezza veramente. Pensa che Ringo venne a casa mia con una torta per il mio compleanno, capito cosa intendo? E’ assolutamente una persona speciale per me!

Joe, riguardo I musicisti che hanno preso parte con rispettivi contribute al tuo nuovo album ci sono anche i tuoi ex compagni dei Toto David Paich, Steve Luke, Simon Phillips, Leland Sklar, Lenny Castro, Nathan East. Com’è stato il processo compositivo con loro al di fuori dei Toto?

(Joe): generalmente, il mio processo compositivo è in linea di principio lo stesso di quello che utilizzo quando lavoro con i Toto. Il mio approccio basico è trascorrere la maggior parte del tempo sul disco, sia come produttore che come compositore. Quindi se sto producendo un brano, vengo ispirato dalla composizione, dalla musica, e allora viene poi la melodia mentre le parole devono ancora attendere, magari ho già alcune idee o linee vocali. E’ soprattutto una crescita costante per il modo con cui scrivo e con cui produco. Questo processo è quasi sempre abbastanza lungo e complesso, e allora quando mi si schiarisce il pensiero dico “questo brano sarebbe fantastico ad esempio per Simon Phillips” oppure “questo brano sarebbe fantastico per Nathan East”, sai, questo genere di cose. Così decidi chi può essere più adatto di altri per i brani.

Nel tuo nuovo disco compaiono anche Ray Williams, Hannah e Mark T. Williams. Com’è stato lavorare con tuo fratello e i tuoi figli? Altre collaborazioni future nelle quali potrebbero essere coinvolti?

(Joe): innanzitutto, Ray Williams è in realtà mia figlia Emma Ray Williams (ride), e Mark è mio fratello, quindi voglio dire, certamente collaboreranno tutti nuovamente con me in futuro, ovvio! E anche mia figlia Hannah Ruick è presente su questo disco, dove duetta con me alla voce. Quindi tutta la mia famiglia e i miei amici più cari compaiono su questo disco, e se farò altri album, di sicuro saranno presenti anche nuovamente.

Riguardo il processo compositivo dietro I nuovi brani, puoi spiegarci qualcosa in più Joe? Ci sono altri ospiti speciali coinvolti in questi brani?

(Joe): bene, la persona che probabilmente porterò con me è Jay Gruska, che ha arrangiato e prodotto “Black Dahlia” e “No Lessons”.E’ un mio caro amico, ci conosciamo bene entrambi da molto tempo, ha anche prodotto il mio primo album da solista nel 1981! Siamo tornati a lavorare assieme su questo album, su queste due composizioni che ti ho appena nominato – abbiamo scritto assieme una e lui poi ha composto l’altra – e sono veramente delle canzoni particolari: una di queste è una ballad ed è veramente fantastica! Ed entrambi i brani si distinguono in tutto il disco, sono stati veramente molto speciali, quindi penso che, sia come produttore che come eccezionale musicista, Jay Gruska merita di essere certamente menzionato!

Un altro vostro videoclip che mi è particolarmente piaciuto durante la quarantena è stata la versione acustica della vostra hit “Africa”. Com’è nata la scelta di reinterpretare in questa nuova e fresca versione un vostro classico? Mi sono sempre chiesto quale fosse il significato dietro questo brano, sin da quando ero un bambino. Potreste gentilmente soddisfare questa mia curiosità?

(Luke): oh, è stata tutta un’idea di Joe. Era da solo a casa sua e mi propose di fare un video assieme, così era per beneficenza e ha raggiunto circa 5 milioni di dollari devoluti ad altri musicisti del mondo, visti i tempi difficili che anche noi artisti stiamo vivendo. Sfortunatamente David (Paich) in quel momento non stava granchè bene, e nessun altro era nei paraggi per essere coinvolto. Così ci siamo detti “facciamolo!” E siamo veramente felici del risultato ottenuto, perché abbiamo fatto una buona cosa per una giusta causa, questo è quanto! Riguardo il vero significato che esiste dietro il brano “Africa”? Credimi, non ne ho veramente idea, sul serio (ride)! Penso che fosse solo una delle fantasie di David Paich riguardo come si potesse vivere in Africa, lui è stato in una scuola cattolica; diversi suoi insegnanti sono stati missionari in Africa, ed inoltre suo fratello frequentò la Picabo School (scuola di escursionisti americana – n. d. r.). Quando girammo il videoclip, nel 1981, fu strano ma veramente interessante. Sai la gente pensò addirittura che fosse un brano contro il razzismo, che naturalmente tutti noi disapproviamo, ma non era assolutamente riferito a quel tema. Dai ragazzo, noi siamo musicisti e ho tanti amici di ogni colore della terra! Non ci venne detto nulla dal direttore di cosa fare nel videoclip, venne tutto spontaneamente!

Joe, se non erro hai anche una relazione di amicizia ed una collaborazione molto stretta con il chitarrista Mike Landau, sin da quando eravate ragazzi, è così? Qual è secondo te la migliore composizione alla quale avete lavorato assieme durante tutti questi anni?

(Joe): adoro lavorare con Mike, voglio dire, Mike era presente nella mia prima band quando ero un teenager, quindi lo conosco da molto tempo e costituisce una grande parte della mia sonorità nel mio repertorio da solista, sai questo genere di cose. Quindi quando sto scrivendo nuovi brani cerco sempre di coinvolgere Mike per le mie composizioni e naturalmente anche Luke, sempre! Nel mio primo album solista erano presenti sia Mike che Luke alle parti di chitarra. Così questi due chitarristi sono i miei preferiti, senza alcun dubbio, e a mio modesto parere sono anche tra i migliori al mondo! Ho anche altri chitarristi che compaiono sui miei dischi, come ad esempio Steve Overton che appare anche nella title track del mio nuovo lavoro (“Denizen Tenant” – n. d. r.), che ho appunto composto assieme a lui e naturalmente devo menzionarlo. Steve è veramente un chitarrista brillante ed anche un gran bel bassista. E un’altra persona che devo assolutamente menzionare è Oscar Bugarin che ha suonato alcune fantastiche linee di chitarra ritmica nell’altro brano, “Never Saw You Coming”. Così come puoi vedere ho avuto veramente fantastici chitarristi su questo disco. Ma sicuramente Landau è una delle persone che conosce perfettamente il mio sound e sa bene come destreggiarsi negli assoli durante i pezzi, quindi non ho mai da spiegargli nulla! Gli mando solo la mia musica e lui sa già cosa deve fare.

Restando sempre sul tema della tua carriera da solista, se ricordo bene hai avuto diverse collaborazioni anche con l’ex cantante dei Toto Bobby Kimball. Hai mai pensato di fare altre collaborazioni con lui in futuro? Siete ancora in contatto?

(Joe): oh, a dirla tutta non sono rimasto in contatto con lui per il momento e credo che purtroppo non ci saranno molte possibilità di fare alter cose assieme perchè non sono sicuro di come sta in salute attualmente. Ma mi è veramente piaciuto molto lavorare a questi progetti con lui nel passato, e facemmo anche un tour assieme in Giappone che fu molto divertente. E diventanno molto molto amici, non abbiamo mai discusso su nulla, certamente un ottimo amico! E’ stato sempre un ero per me come cantante, non canta mai a vuoto, ed è anche una persona simpatica, piacevole e stupenda. Sai, senza di lui non ci sarei stato io. Ho da sempre un incredibile rispetto per Bobby e, senti mi piacerebbe veramente lavorare con lui nuovamente, ma so che non è stato granchè bene ed attualmente non sono certo che possa andare in tour come ai vecchi tempi. Ma l’unica cosa che so per certo riguardo Bobby è che la sua voce è ancora li, può ancora cantare ma non sono sicuro che possa altrettanto sentire al meglio come un tempo. Ma la sua voce credimi è ancora forte per una persona di circa settant’anni. E’ stato veramente fantastico lavorare assieme a lui a quegli album, assieme anche a Bill Champlin (membro storico dei Chicago – n. d. r.) e a Jason Scheff!

Joe, come tutti sanno, tuo padre John Williams è stato un famoso compositore di colonne sonore per i film. Quanto importante è stata la sua influenza per la tua carriera da musicista? Hai mai pensato di collaborare con lui in tutti questi anni?

(Joe): innanzitutto, lui è stato veramente importante per la mia musica, crescendo con lui. Sono cresciuto in una casa dove c’era sempre musica, quindi è quasi una seconda lingua per me (ride)! La sua influenza su di me è stata a dir poco fondamentale, soprattutto quando ho iniziato anche come compositore di musiche pe la TV mi aiutò abbastanza. Lo chiamavo frequentemente per chiedergli ad esempio “come posso fare questo” oppure “come posso condurre quest’altro”, domande e quesiti di questo tipo e lui mi ha sempre aiutato suggerendomi alcune idee fantastiche. Ho anche collaborato con lui, mi ha procacciato e fornito diversi lavori. Ho lavorato ad esempio a tre episodi della saga di Star Wars e un paio di altri progetti quando ero molto giovane e quindi ho avuto la grande opportunità di collaborare con lui. E’ stato molto carino e gentile con me durante tutti questi anni!

Nel 1994 hai anche collaborato alla colonna sonora del film “Il Re Leone”, in particolare su “Hakuna Matata” e su “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”. Com’è stata questa esperienza?

(Joe): è stata a dir poco fantastica e si è trattata di una sessione in studio. Prima di fare altro, quando ero un adolescente ero un cantante in studio e mi capitava di cantare per anche per gli spot commerciali di radio e televisioni, cose di questo tipo. Così il lavoro per la musica de “Il Re Leone” è stata più o meno la stessa cosa! Sono semplicemente entrato in studio a fare il mio lavoro e il produttore mi disse cosa cantare ed ho terminato di registrare il tutto solo in due ore! Mi hanno tutti ringraziato ma non sapevo assolutamente se sarei apparso nella colonna sonora del film. Così eccoti spiegato come andò questa esperienza, e sei mesi dopo mi mandarono, per me e mia moglie, due biglietti per un’anteprima del film e solo allora fu quando scoprii che ero presente tra le musiche del film (ride)! Per me fu incredibilmente entusiasmante, così vado ancora fiero di quanto feci a quel tempo.

Un’altra domanda sempre per te Joe! Relativamente alla tua fantastica collaborazione con Bill Champlin e Peter Friestedt, mi è veramente piaciuto molto il vostro ultimo disco, “II”, pubblicato quest’anno. Stai per caso lavorando con loro a del materiale nuovo?

(Joe): oh, grazie mille caro, apprezzo veramente il fatto che ti sia piaciuto il disco! Non sto lavorando a nessuna cosa nuova per il momento. Questi progetti CWF sono soprattutto delle creature di Peter Friestedt, capisci cosa intendo dire? Veramente, non ho lavorato molto all’ultimo album, è soprattutto farina di Bill e di Peter su quest’ultimo disco. Peter ha prodotto questi lavori ed io sono più che altro un guest singer su questi dischi. So che probabilmente sia io che Peter faremo altre cose assieme e naturalmente anche con Bill, lui è sempre dentro questo progetto e partecipa attivamente anche nel processo compositivo. Solo non sono sicuro quanto potrà succedere perché ho parecchie cose da fare assieme a Luke, ai nuovi Toto e le mie cose da solista, come puoi ben immaginare. Posso solo dire che Peter è sempre al lavoro nello scrivere e comporre nuova musica, ha sempre idee fantastiche e sono certo ci sarà altro assieme in futuro!

Riferendoci sempre al discorso delle collaborazioni musicali, Steve, poco meno di un mese fa il tuo caro amico Eddie Van Halen – che fu anche coinvolto assieme a te su ‘Thriller’ di Michael Jackson – è tristemente scomparso. Come vuoi condividere il suo ricordo con noi?

(Luke): cosa posso dire? Eddie era veramente una delle persone a me più vicine ed un grandissimo amico, senza alcun dubbio, non solo come compagno di chitarra! Sono ancora distrutto dalla sua scomparsa, sto cercando di metabolizzarla in un modo diverso e in tempi diversi, sai, ciascuno di noi ha un suo modo personale di interiorizzare il dolore. Adoro Eddie come uomo, la sua famiglia, sono stato in contatto anche con Alex, il fratello, durante tutti questi anni. Inoltre il mio primogenito, Trev, è letteralmente cresciuto con gli assoli di Eddie. Suo fratello ed io siamo amici da più di quarant’anni, e credimi, la musica è stata veramente una piccola parte della nostra forte e profonda relazione. Ad ogni modo mi è veramente piaciuto suonare della musica con questi ragazzi, Eddie ed Alex, e ovviamente registrare alcune parti e jammare assieme. Senza dubbi sono stati una parte fondamentale della mia vita!

Qual’è invece, Joe, la tua tua relazione con le nuove tecnologie digitali usate per comporre musica? Il tuo modo di comporre si è per caso evoluto durante tutti questi anni con rispetto a questi nuovi dispositivi o è rimasto pressocchè lo stesso?

(Joe): beh, in generale, continuo ancora a comporre principalmente al pianoforte, sai uso ancora questo strumento per il processo compositivo, ma naturalmente anche esso si è in parte evoluto con il progredire delle tecnologie, soprattutto perchè non sono principalmente uno strumentista. Ho il mio stile musicale ma generalmente uso le tecnologie anche per il processo compositivo, specialmente tutti i fantastici suoni di samples che sono disponibili per noi oggi. Ed il potere dei computer e delle sequenze che abbiamo oggi, wow! Quindi si, uso tutte queste tecnologie sia per il processo compositivo e sia come produttore e qualche volta sono ispirato dall’uso intelligente di questi nuovi dispositivi anche per le parti vocali, le uso veramente tutti i giorni.

Luke, riguardo il tuo rapporto stretto con tuo figlio Trev (che intervisterò il mese prossimo), cosa pensi di lui, sia come musicista ed anche come padre, e della sua nuova band LEVARA? Stai pensando magari di comporre qualche nuova cosa assieme a lui in futuro?

(Luke): beh, penso che ognuno ed anche io, come padre, deve andare molto fiero di un figlio come il mio Trev. Ha messo su la sua band, e gli auguro veramente venti e più anni di grandi successi. E’ anche al lavoro come produttore e scrive diversi brani ed assoli per altri musicisti, ha ricevuto anche il suo primo disco d’oro (per la collaborazione con la band americana HALESTORM – n. d. r.) e sposerà spero una gran bella ragazza, Madison Cain, la figlia di Jonathan Cain (storico tastierista dei Journey), ed è veramente divertente tutto ciò per noi, per me e Jonathan, perché siamo vecchi amici e ci incontrammo per la prima volta a 19 anni mi sembra (ride). Ad ogni modo Trev sta vivendo la sua vita, a casa sua, ha messo la testa a posto, e sono così fiero di lui! E’ un musicista fantastico, ed anche un eccezionale compositore. E’ stato ingegnere del suono dei pezzi che ho fatto per Mark Lettieri degli Snarky Puppy ieri sera. Sono molto contento per lui ed è così divertente quando ricordo mio figlio da bambino e lo prendevo dalle braccia di sua madre per cullarlo, prendendolo con le mie mani, è veramente fantastico!

Adesso una domanda riguardo I tuoi attuali ascolti musicali, Joe. Quali sono i giovani artisti o le band che ti hanno colpito di più oggi e perché?

(Joe): wow, è veramente una domanda difficile a cui rispondere (ride). Bene, dammi un secondo perché ho ascoltato qualsiasi cosa in questo ultimo anno, soprattutto dovendo lavorare al mio nuovo album! Quindi devo un attimo vedere sul mio cellulare e trovare cosa ho ascoltato nell’ultimo anno, capisci? Perché ho ascoltato veramente molto di tutto (cerca i suoi brani ascoltati l’ultimo anno sul suo dispositivo – n. d. r.): ho ascoltato soprattutto molta musica classica, più di qualsiasi altra cosa, ed anche i Keane ultimamente, adoro veramente la voce del cantante, e naturalmente ho ascoltato un sacco i Led Zeppelin ultimamente, e diversi dei miei brani preferiti dei The Beatles. Sai, adesso devo uscire fuori per vedere cosa c’è di nuovo, perché ho trascorso così tanto tempo a lavorare sul mio album e a preparare la sua uscita, così al momento sono poco in contatto con cosa ci sta in giro in campo di novità musicali.

Tornando ora al tuo imminente disco, Steve, ci saranno cinque nuove composizioni originali e tre cover di alcuni classici del rock (“Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” dei Traffic, “Welcome To The Club” di Joe Walsh e “Bridge of Sighs” di Robin Tower). Perché la scelta di inserire queste tre cover? Saranno presenti alcune bonus track su alcune edizioni speciali del disco?

(Luke): no, in realtà ho scritto otto brani per l’album, ed ho scelto quelli che mi ossessionavano, non quelli che normalmente sceglierebbe la gente, e voglio inoltre tributare i miei eroi di inizio anni ’70. Sai, Joe Walsh è uno dei miei eroi da sempre ed è anche mio amico, mentre il classico dei Traffic è una sorta di groove dalla melodia oscura ed ho pensato si adattasse molto bene alla band attuale, e…scusami ma mi sono dimenticato l’altro brano (ride)! Ma ad ogni modo, ah si giusto, “Bridge of Sighs” perché volevo tributare Robin Tower, soprattutto perché avevo bisogno di dare un po di matto, ed è stato divertente! In generale ho fatto e faccio tutt’ora dischi principalmente per me stesso, e naturalmente anche per le persone a cui piacciono, sto solo cercando di uscire fuori dal giro degli ascoltatori a cui non piace la musica che faccio, semplice. E credimi, il nuovo album di Joe Williams è veramente stupendo! Il mio disco è più improntato su brani che si possono eseguire dal vivo, mentre quello di Joe è esattamente agli antipodi. Così lasciami mostrarti come produco un mio disco da me ed impazzirai letteralmente! Voglio dire, la composizione, le parti vocali, i suoni, è tutto molto psichedelico, veramente molto figo, man!

In riferimento invece al processo compositivo dietro i cinque nuovi brani presenti sul disco, Luke, puoi dirci qualcosa in più? Ci sono altri ospiti speciali coinvolti in questi pezzi?

(Luke): no, non sono previsti altri ospiti coinvolti in questo album. Ho gli stessi musicisti e la stessa band per l’intero disco. Come puoi immaginare, Joe mi ha aiutato con alcune parti vocali in diversi brani. Sai, ogni cosa che abbiamo fatto assieme anche in doppiaggio l’abbiamo fatta lo stesso giorno, subito dopo che abbiamo composto i brani e li poi ho aggiunto le parti vocali ed ho arrangiato ogni altra cosa che dovevo fare. Non volevo assolutamente sovra produrre questo disco, perché voglio che venga fuori in modo spontaneo e veritiero, e lo è veramente, e ovviamente “non voglio spendere molti soldi per questo disco” (ride)! Sono molto curioso di vedere quale sarà il responso dei fan e della gente in generale, come lo prenderanno, perché è un po differente rispetto al passato, ma no so dirti in effetti il perché.

Un’altra domanda per Joe questa volta. Durante tutti questi anni trascorsi con i Toto hai avuto la possibilità di condividere questa esperienza con altri fatntastici musicisti come te. Alcuni di loro purtroppo sono tristemente scomparsi. Come vorresti ricordare rispettivamente Fergie Frederiksen e I fratelli Jeff e Mike Porcaro?

(Joe): beh, cosa posso dire a riguardo? Li ricordo tutti finemente! Jeff naturalmente era una persona alquanto carina, ho dei bellissimi ricordi riguardo lui, soprattutto per la sua passione per la musica, la sua passione per il suonare qualsiasi tipo di genere, e la sua scomparsa fu così dolorosa per me, credimi! Fu anche il più contrariato quando non stavo facendo bene prima di uscirmene dalla band, ma ad ogni modo siamo rimasti molto amici anche dopo che lasciai il gruppo, ha anche suonato su alcuni miei album solisti. E soprattutto imparai veramente molto da lui, da Jeff, su cosa vuol dire essere dei professionisti, mi parlò e mi spiegò come potevo essere professionale e di questo gli sono veramente molto grato! La sia scomparsa fu una perdita tragica…Relativamente a Fergie, purtroppo non ho mai avuto la possibilità di incontrarlo personalmente, faccia a faccia, ma abbiamo conversato diverse volte, ed ha anche suonato su uno dei miei album, e in realtà mi ha sostituito in un concerto che non ho potuto fare, era a Jakarta mi sembra, salì sul palco e suonò per me. Ma sfortunatamente mi è mancata la possibilità di incontrarlo di persona prima che venisse a mancare, il che è stata una vera sfortuna! Ed infine riguardo Mike, sai, probabilmente non l’ho mai veramente conosciuto bene come avrei voluto fare, ho suonato per diverso tempo sia in studio che in tour con lui, almeno per un paio di anni, ma Mike è sempre stato una sorta di “mistero” di persona per me, non ho trascorso molto tempo con lui. Ma ancora, anche la sua è stata una perdita tragica ed immensa, una di quelle vite terminate troppo presto.

In relazione anche a questo ultimo argomento trattato, Joe, se dovessi presentare la tua musica a qualcuno che non l’ha mai sentita, quale album sceglieresti (tra i tuoi dischi con i Toto, quelli da solista ed altre tue collaborazioni) e perché?

(Joe): oh, questa pure è un’altra domanda difficile, ma ti risponderò dicendo che suggerirei a chi non conosce la mia musica di ascoltare questo nuovo imminente album, di sicuro! Perché penso che questo disco sia il migliore che abbia mai inciso, e penso anche che in termini di brani che ho inciso assieme ai Toto, tutti quanti suggerirei, ad eccezione forse per ‘The Seventh One’. Ma in particolare credimi, sono molto fiero di quest’ultimo disco che ho inciso!

Ora ti pongo invece un’altra domanda un po particolare Joe. Qual è stato l’episodio più divertente che ti è successo durante la tua lunga carriera nel mondo della musica che ti piacerebbe condividere e ricordare con noi?

(Joe): oh Dio, beh una delle storie più divertenti è quando uscii fuori da un albero totalmente nudo, senza alcun vestito! Successe tanti anni fa in New Jersey quando ero nei Toto durante gli anni ’80, e dovetti andare nell’atrio dell’hotel per chiedere la chiave della mia stanzapoichè, come puoi immaginare, non avevo nessun altra possibilità di rientrare in stanza (ride)!

Cari Luke e Joe, grazie ancora per il Vostro prezioso tempo dedicatomi! Un’ultima domanda: che consiglio o suggerimento mandereste a tutti i giovani musicisti?

(Luke): grazie di cuore caro! Cosa potrei dire a tutti i giovani musicisti? Uscite fuori dalla vostra tana, continuate sempre ad esercitarvi e a suonare tanto, non ho nessun altra parola magica o profonda saggezza da spacciare per consiglio da dar loro! Solo posso dirgli di divertirsi con la propria musica, e se le cose andranno alla grande, continuate sempre a puntare in alto, solo questo! Buona fortuna a tutti!

(Joe): il mio consiglio che mi sento di dare è semplicemente “continuate così”! Capisci cosa intendo? La disciplina è una delle cose più importanti, e non arrendetevi, so perfettamente che spesso c’è da scoraggiarsi e che ci sono tantissime persone li fuori che proveranno sempre e comunque a farlo nei vostri confronti, ma sul serio non mollate e continuate sempre ad esercitarvi, questo è il consiglio più importante che mi sento di mandare a tutti i giovani musicisti in questo periodo!

ON NOVEMBER 12, 2020, STEVE LUKATHER AND JOSEPH WILLIAMS ANNOUNCED THE SIMULTANEOUS RELEASE (SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 26, 2021) OF THEIR RESPECTIVE SOLO ALBUMS FOR THE PLAYERS CLUB / MASCOT LABEL GROUP. ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR IMMINENT RETURN TO THE STAGE, SCHEDULED IN LIVE STREAMING FOR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, WITH A NEW TOTO LINEUP, WE CONTACTED THE TWO MUSICIANS TO LET THEM TELL US THESE IMPORTANT NEWS AND SOME ANECDOTES OF THEIR LONG CAREER AND COLLABORATION!

There are times in life when it is never easy to escape the banality and obviousness of the questions to be asked when you are in the presence of internationally acclaimed artists such as Steve Lukather (guitarist, leader and co-founder of Toto) and Joseph Williams (singer and historic member of the Californian band). The moment this unmissable occasion materialized, I admit it, my hands were shaking and my heart was pounding. And yet, despite the difficult and challenging task planned, our online meeting with Luke and Joe was nothing short of fantastic and full of interesting topics that our two guests, exclusively for VeroRock.it, have skillfully told, with that touch of sympathy and irony that has always distinguished them, but above all with such serenity and spontaneity!

On Tuesday, November 3rd and Wednesday, November 4th, we talked with Luke and Joe about the main news that have been involving them for several months now: from the release, next February 26th 2021, of their respective solo albums ‘I Fond The Sun Again’ (Lukather) and‘Denizen Tenant’ (Williams) for The Players Club/Mascot Label Groups, to the new return on stage with a renewed line-up of Toto, whose world debut is scheduled for a live streaming concert next Saturday, November 21st!
So there are many topics discussed with the two famous artists, who have proved to be very sociable, helpful and attentive to the questions asked by the undersigned. From their different answers has certainly emerged their long and renewed artistic partnership, the result of a long friendship, which has seen them, even on this occasion, collaborate in their respective solo works.

Moreover, despite the recent legal issues related to diatribes with some former members of the Californian band, Luke and Joe have not lost heart and have managed, thanks to the spiritual and artistic support of friend and co-founder David Paich, to return to the scene with this live premiere and a world tour called “DOGZ OF OZ TOUR WORLDWIDE” that will see them play in the USA, Europe, Aystralia, Asia and New Zealand, next year! We also discussed together the topics related to the current difficult period due to the covid-19 pandemic, their relationship with technologies and some of their important musical collaborations during their careers. Finally, the two artists wanted to share with us the memory of some of their companions who died recently or since many years: Eddie Van Halen, Jeff and Mike Porcaro, Fergie Frederiksen.

So let’s leave the “talk” to our two fantastic guests, without first thanking their management, in particular Steve Karas and Keith Hagan of SKH Music Agency, who were helpful, friendly, caring and highly cooperative with me: without their support this would not have been possible!

Hi Luke & Joe, first of all thank You so much for the precious time you’re dedicating us, it’s a true honor for me having an interview with You, and welcome board on VeroRock.it. Let’s start with the first question: how are going the rehearsals for the upcoming live streaming premiere of the new Toto lineup, scheduled for the November 21?

(Luke): great and really unbelievable! I really missed playing with these “snarky puppies” guys, these musicians are from another level, do you know what I mean? Especially playing with young and talented musicians like these, they really pushing, they pushing! You know, I’m a 63 years old and It’s normally I can’t live and have their same energy, but I really enjoy playing music man, and I missed it for some years. The last version of Toto for me It’s over, I didn’t like it, but after a year, fighting a legal battle and having payed all my monies, I thought “why I shouldn’t be with David Paich and just using Toto name and having our money back”? I perfectly knows that these situations are not so good for everyone, for the fans and for all the persons involved, but I have a life and a family – two ex wifes, four kids – and a reputation to defend. I live in Los Angeles and since October last year I was bored about this situation. But You know, now I only want my money back and relax, sharing other great moment with fan all over the world and just living like I was 17 years old back on the road again! I’ve putted together a new band with some old best friends and some really great new guys, where everyone’s happy. I mean, playing with guys like John (Pierce), Robert (Searight), Steve (Maggiora), Dominique (Taplin) and Warren (Ham) it’s simply amazing, above all for their different approaches and background: from rock’n’roll to funky and so on! You know, my life it’s all about music and having some fresh new experience with other great musicians and not with some countryclub men it’s simply the best for me now. I really don’t care to live all for the people’s money, I’m not a greed person. I’ve all tour booked for next year with Ringo’s All-Starr Band and the “new” Toto, in several European festival, so trust me, it’s gonna blow minds! Unfortunately I missed so much playing with some old friends of mine like Jeff Porcaro but, trust me once again, the new drummer and bass player (John Pierce) are really amazing and they know well how to do their job!

(Joe): well, we’ve not only had the rehearsals but we’ve already played the entire show and shoot all the thing for this live streaming premiere, it’s gonna be incredible! I’m sure all the old and new Toto fan will be really impressed from the quality of this upcoming show, for the setlist proposed and of course for the amazing musicians involved in this fresh new adventure of the band, so let’s check it out, you won’t regret it!

Steve, trust me, for me it’s a pleasure having an interview with one of my favorite artist of all time, I can’t forget the first time I’ve seen You playing with Toto live during the ‘Falling In Between World Tour’ in Rome many years ago! Do you know that we also share one more thing in common, Steve? We were both born on October 21st, only I am exactly thirty years younger!

(Luke): thank You so much my friend, I really appreciate your true words and yes, I remember well that summer night where we played with Toto in Rome, I guess It was in 2006 if I remind well! And, really we were born exactly on the same day? That’s a pleasure, we are both “balance”! So, since a few days have passed since our birthday I wish you, even if with a slight delay, many dear wishes for a happy birthday brother!

Related to this new Toto adventure, how was born this decision to back with this new lineup after the unforgettable last 40th Anniversary ended the last year?

(Luke): oh it’s very simple! Joseph did his solo album, I did my solo album too for the same label (Mascot Records – ed.), working both on each solo record, David Paich also collaborated with us on several songs and no, it’s not a Toto project but it’s the closest thing to Toto I guess. So we’ve decided to promote together these albums with the streaming premiere scheduled next Saturday November 21st, and we both figured “We’re gonna tour! Why should we tour separately?” We can do it together as in the old days. And Paich added “and you can use the name of the band and playing the tunes”. So I replaced “well, there’s no reason why I can’t play music from my entire career” (You know I really wrote a lot) but, You know, I just wanted to stay away from financial and legal troubles. I really don’t understand why they hate me and Dave, accusing me stealing the money from the band. But I only suggest them to find a good hobby, because I was really bored about this uncomfortable situation for everyone. Anyway, peace & love!

Talking about this upcoming live premiere: which are your expectations? And what the fan have to expect from this unexpected return? Any interesting news about the setlist prepared? Any special guest?

(Luke): well, I’ll answer very simply! Every time there’s been a change in the band, that have always reflected on the feelings of the fan and curious: someone’s happy, someone’s not. I only think You gonna have to see it to believe! It’s much rock’n’roll in the sense of the powerhouse, because there’s a lot of chops and loud dynamics, but we’re still playing the great songs we wrote, just gonna playing the best we can, like with the insane vocal and many other things. And another great and wired things for me it’s that, every time I turn around on the stage, I see everyone simile and it’s really nice for a change! And whatever above, when You’re involved with these guys for two weeks, I really can figure myself on the road with these persons for 70 years more, if they wanna be there! Plus, I learnt from them, because they are real great musicians. Related to the premiere event, there will be no guests, unless if there’s somebody in town coming out to jam, that’s fine for me (laughs), or maybe if there’s someone in a special occasion, could be possible, for sure, but I couldn’t predict it! By the way this is 0 alchool (he shows me a bottle of analchoolic beer – ed.) but You can understand me, I’ve been up since 6 o’clock (we are laughing together) and I’m working everyday!

(Joe): well, of course You gonna be expect how it works this new lineup of the band, and certainly there are most exciting news about the setlist prepared for this show, because Luke and I get to play some stuffs from our upcoming solo albums, which is different from any other Toto‘s setlist made before. As I answered before, now every fan could listening new but experienced musicians, as Luke states, playing and approaching with our old Toto‘s songs and then, at the same time, with our new solo material that it’s really a true collaboration between friends, firstly, and then long-time collaborators and bandmates. Also both me and Luke, we have other several solo materials and albums and certainly we could propose also our old solo stuffs, for sure for the upcoming world tour!

Luke, in these days all the media news are focused mainly on the American elections. Sorry for the question: but have you voted yet?

(Luke): not now, I’ve voted a couple of weeks ago man. I’m staying in my house because, as You can see, I’m really busy in these days. About this election I don’t wanna say nothing, ‘cause I might jinx it. I really wanna come back on the road stage and meet people all around the world. And that’s a damn shame, I don’t live like them (the politicians – ed.), I don’t understand the logic, the game, the stupid mentality of an uneducated part of them. It’s a real crazy shit the time we are living since several months, and we need to turn on the light and escape from this darkness. Not in my all life I think to have seen this shit…Music heals, that’s why I play! Personally the music related to the political problems (like Bruce Springsteen or Bono Vox usually do) it’s not cool for me, I respect their point of view, but I think that, as a musician, I only have the role to entertain and play for people that love my music, so let the music outside the politic! Believe me, I’m a very spiritual person and I prefer do not talk about these political issues. I prefer to talk more about the Dogz (of Oz).

In a recent picture of these rehearsals for the upcoming event, published on Toto’s official Facebook page, there’s also the presence of your friend and longtime bandmate David Paich. Is there the possibility of his possible involvement both for this event and for possible future live dates and tour? How are his current health conditions?

(Luke): yeah, of course, even if David (Paich) is our musical director. But surely he could always come up on stage and playing with us a couple of songs, for sure, he will always do that! He’ve just had some medical troubles, he’s 65 years old and in the last years had many medical issues. So now he have to solve these critical health issues but he will always be part of the Toto, he made the history of Toto, as a musicians and as a composer too! David is still part, even if as a silent partner for now. About the rest of the Toto‘s guys, my former band mates, I don’t talk about them. I mean Lenny (Castro) and Shannon (Forrest) I adore them, but they won’t continue with us, It’s their decision and I respect It. But we’re still friends of course, I always talk with Lenny and follow his musical projects in which he’s involved. Some people say that I’ve fired up them from the band, but it’s not the true, it’s a different story. But that’s my thought, so everyone could choose what they want to believe!

I think You’ve just answer me, Luke, but anyway, about the other co-founding Toto member and your ex bandmate Steve Porcaro: are you still in contact with him? Any chance to see him alive again with you and Toto for an appearance or for a couple of songs?

(Luke): definitely no. I’ve try to speak with Steve several time ago, but I guess he hates me, he hates the band, and he hates also life I think. Maybe he just wants to do his own things, but it’s ok for him. How I can explain and summarize this issue? Maybe a marriage gone really wrong after 45 years? I don’t wish him any evil, I really hope he will have success, health and happiness and all the good things in his own life.

Always in these last weeks You’ve also announced the “DOGZ OF OZ TOUR WORLDWIDE”, a worldwide tour that will take North America, Europe, Asia, Australia / New Zealand. What about the setlist and the songs that will be played? Any chance to see you in Italy too?

(Joe): oh, it’s gonna be mostly the same setlist yet prepared for this upcoming live streaming premiere event, but when we tour we’re going probably have more songs. Because I think that when we get back out there on the road the show is going to be longer, so we’ll probably have also a couple of things from our solo albums, and obviously more Toto stuffs. But, in the meanwhile, we will propose to all our fan many others music contents on our websites, so, while we’re waiting the end of pandemic situation, surely You will find other interesting news on our web platform!

(Luke): yes I hope to back soon on the road with this new band, around the world as usually, when we’ll be free from this prison! Are You seriously? Italy is really one of my favorite place in the world, I wanna go on vacation with my girlfriend also in Tuscany, in Sorrento too, all the beautiful You got there, like Capri. I spent time there in the south of Italy too! About the setlist for this upcoming tour, I mean, we’ll play all the Toto‘s stuff we played before but with this new great musicians, so people will testify how good the old songs could sound with this band! But we will play also a couple of our solo things, so it will be more interesting than before in my humble opinion. And it will be real, and for one time only, so You can record with this (he show me his mobile phone – ed.). But whatever, I know that some fan desire to put together once again the old band but I can’t do that. I can’t please everybody, above all the haters, I don’t read this shit anymore, I don’t cut myself because I don’t hate myself, You know what I mean? I’m actually happy and I’m doing the best I can, simply this! I’m sorry that people don’t dig it, so I suggest them “please, don’t come” if You dislike my way of thinking, just change the channel if You don’t like what You’re seeing! I’m sorry if someone of them disagree with me, but I’ve got the right to do so, it’s all about my life not only as a musician but mainly as a human being!

Concerning this new Toto lineup, excluding your longtime friend and bandmate Joe Williams, could you shortly introduce the ensemble of the musicians that will take part on this tour, Steve?

(Luke): yeah, each one of them is dude, and we’re having so much fun together, and everyone of them comes from different places, you know? I mean my drummer “Sput” (Robert Searight) comes from Snarky Puppy and he playd with Snoop Dogg for about ten years and he’s an incredible rock’n’roll and funk drummer. And he’s also sings and he’s really funny as a person too. Much better than with my ex band mates, really! What could I say? I love all of them!

So, as it happens for every new beginning, could we expect also a future new Toto album next years? Are You already working on some new tracks?

(Luke): no, no definitely not, it couldn’t happen man! I mean mainly for the legal troubles too, but I think that what we could do wouldn’t be more the same. I mean, I have my solo album as Joe‘s one, so, do You remember what’s happened with Peter Gabriel when he left Genesis? He made one of the most brilliant record than everybody made, and he was himself that have controlled it since the beginning till the end. So each people involved in the past years, such as Leland Sklar or Simon Phillips, we’re still friends so maybe they could be always involved in our solo projects. Some people think we’re not friends but it’s not so, Simon left the band for his solo career, when Dave (Paich) and Steve (Porcaro) came back: the business changed, many things changed too. Simon wanted to have his own band, I understand and it’s good for him, I respect that, because it’s “his way” and it’s most important! Maybe he wanted to play new music and not only the old Toto‘s stuff, as he made for about 20 years. I really love his music.

Next November 12, will be announced also the upcoming release both of your solo albums, that will come out on February 26 via The Players Club / Mascot Label Group. How was this decision to release the same day the two records? Is it just a coincidence or there’s a reason why?

(Joe): originally we made the records completely independents from each other, but we saw the finish of them around the same time and, of course, since Luke played on my album and I’ve sang all over his album, we’ve played our demos shuffles one time and it sounded a little bit like a Toto‘s album. So we decided that we will release this records at the same time and, since we’re both on the same record company (Mascot Label Group – ed.), it makes sense to do that. So that’s the reason why we’ve decided to release them at similar time!

(Luke): we gonna be careful about this news (laughs), because it’s a little bit secret! It was really an important collaboration to me, sharing once again new music and composition with Joe. He made some great torch songs, I played on one song on his solo record and it was really amazing because we’ve showed to each other our different side as a musician and as a real friends too. I’ve seen a great atmosphere, It remind to me maybe the Kingdom of Desire‘s days, back in the time. And also we’ve played together for this premiere some Toto‘s old songs, not all of course, but, You know, it’s totally different when You sat together to compose new music while if You have to film it for a streaming event: You have to be careful for the quality of the show in that occasion.

Focusing now on your upcoming album titled ‘I Found The Sun Again’, Luke, first of all I was really impressed about the title chosen, mostly for the sad period we are living all over the world. Is there any relation between this hopeful title and the actual pandemic situation?

(Luke): well, honestly, I wrote this title for my girlfriend. Jeff Babko and Joe helped me to find some good lyrics to express the right feelings. But, of course, the title and the main part of music is mine, the melody and stuffs like that. That’s probably the only song in the album that sounds near Toto, because the rest of it take another musical direction, but that’s part of my soul too. You know, “I Found The Sun Again”, is simply a beautiful song for a beautiful woman. In that time, when I wrote It, I was miserable depressed, fucked up emotionally talking: a Friday night watching TV by myself. I felt like I was wasting the way, then I’ve seen the pictures of my kids, thinking their thoughts about me in that moment such as “daddy isn’t so cool, he’s aged” (laughs), so I tried to feel better and hanging out, because I consider myself a lucky person!

Focusing now on your upcoming album titled ‘Denizen Tenant’, Joe, first of all which is exactly the meaning of the title? Which is the story behind this?

(Joe): yeah, the two words basically mean that “you are an occupant of your country” or “you are denizen of Italy” and “you are also a tenant of your home”. So these words basically mean the same things. The meaning of ‘Denizen Tenant’ it’s like “a cat that is wild but when it enters into your home and decides that’s his house”! So another description for this album’s title is “a guy that comes to your party and never leaves”! I know it’s a metaphoric explanation but that’s it, there’s not any other meaning concerning the title of the album, believe or not!

Related to this sad pandemic situation, how did you spent the main part of your life during these hard months? Are you reflecting about the possibility to play other streaming gig during next year if the situation won’t solve so easy?

(Luke): no, because I think streaming event could work only for a while, but It’s not the same experience as the live concert. It’s great, ‘cause You have the opportunity to see the musicians without the movement and the other noises of the crowd, for me this streaming show is an upgrade rehearsal, but it’s not the same when You’re every night in front of the people, and You have to offer them a great show without any issues. I really wanna turn out from this sad and difficult situation, I wanna back on the road again with Joe and the other guys, I can’t wait for it! Like I said, It’s our very first performance so you have to keep it on mind, because when we’ll back on the road, I hope soon, will be totally different, for sure! It’s gonna be cool for people who dig it!

(Joe): I’m sure that we will probably think about that possibility if it doesn’t resolve so easy, I know It’s gonna take some time but, eventually, we will get back out on the road to do concerts. You know, sooner than later, I’m sure there’s gonna be some kind of an answer to this whole virus situation and, of course, people will get back to the live event. In the meantime, we will constantly create contents for the internet and we will do possibly other streaming concert, only if need be, but I guess there are true goals to get back out on the road and, hopefully, there’s gonna be on 2021! Right now, we have some dates booked, already scheduled, and I really feel confident that we’re gonna be out for the next year! I’m so sorry for this pandemic situation also in Italy and my heart goes out to you!

Steve, I really enjoyed your first single and videoclip published, “Run To Me”, co-written with David Paich and Joe Williams that features also your friend Ringo Star. How was born this song? Which is – if there is – the meaning behind this lyrics?

(Luke): yeah, that was fun, it was Ringo‘s 80 birthday and so we decided to make a video with him and we played on, he’s one of my best friends. And then we’ve written another song for his upcoming solo album. I hope it will be include in it, but anyway, whatever it is, I’m happy to have composed this song for Ringo! It was fun and he enjoyed to be involved in it and take the challenge for the clip, definitely! We wrote the lyrics with Joe and Ringo was excited about this nice song. Man, working with him (Ringo) it’s such a joy for me, and he really appreciate it. Ringo came to my house with a cake for my birthday, You know what I mean? It’s a real special person to me!

Joe, about the musicians that have taken part with contributions on this album there are also your band-mates from Toto David Paich and Steve Luke, Simon Phillips, Leland Sklar, Lenny Castro, Nathan East. How was the composition process with them outside Toto?

(Joe): generally, my composition process is basically the same as if I was working in Toto. The way I work is spending most of the time on the record, as a producer as well as a writer or composer. So, if I’m producing a track, I get inspired the songwriting, the music, and then the melody and the words yet to come, the vocal ideas. It’s also a constant grow for the way how I write and how I produce. This process it’s almost always long, and then becomes clear to me like “this song will be great for Simon” or “this song will be perfect for Nathan East”, You know, that kind of things. So You cast who will be perfect for the songs.

In your upcoming album compared also Ray Williams, Hannah and Mark T. Williams. How is working with Your brother and sons? Any other future collaboration in which they are involved too?

(Joe): first of all, Ray Williams is actually my daughter Emma Ray Williams (laughs), and Mark is my brother, so I mean, of course they gonna collaborate with me in the future, obviously! And also my daughter Hannah Ruick is on this album singing a duet with me. So all my friends and family feature on this record, and if I’ll make more record, of sure they gonna appear also again.

Related to the composition process behind the new songs, Joe, could you tell us something more? Are there other special guests involved in these songs?

(Joe): well, the one person I probably will bring up with my own is Jay Gruska, who has arranged and produced “Black Dahlia” and “No Lessons”. He’s a dear friend, we know each other since a long time, he produced my first solo record in 1981! We get back together for this album, working on these two songs – we co-wrote one and he wrote one – and they’re very special songs: one of them is a ballad and it’s really amazing! And both these songs stand out on the record, has been very special, so I think, as a guest producer and as an incredible musician, Jay Gruska has to be mentioned!

Another videoclip from yours that I’ve really enjoyed during the quarantine was the acoustic version of your hit “Africa”. How was born this decision to remake this new fresh version of this classic? I’ve always wondered which was the meaning behind this song, since I was a child. Could You please satisfy my curiosity?

(Luke): oh, it was a Joe‘s idea. He was alone in his house and he proposed to make a video with me, so it was for charity and It raised 5 millions dollars for other world musicians. Unfortunately David at that point was not well, and nobody else was around to be involved. So we said “we’ll do it”! And we’re really happy about it, because we did a good thing for a good cause, that’s it! About the real meaning behind the song “Africa”? I’ve no fucking idea about it, trust me (laughs)! I guess It was just a David Paich‘s fantasies about how to live in Africa, he attended a Catholic school; several of his teachers had done missionary work in Africa, and his brother went to the Picabo School (a school for excursionists – ed.). When we made the videoclip, in 1981, it was weird but really interesting. You know, people thought It was a song against the racism, that of course all of us disappoint, but It didn’t concerned about this topic. Come on man, we’re musicians, I have friends of each color! We’ve never told from the director what to do in that video, it was simply spontaneously!

Joe, You’ve also a strenght relation and collaboration with guitarist Mike Landau since you were kids, isn’t it? Which is in your opinion the best composition you’ve worked on together through all these years?

(Joe): I love working with Mike, I mean Mike was in my first band when I was a teenager, so I’ve known him for a long time and he constitutes a very big part of my sound in my solo career, You know, that kind of thing. So when I’m writing songs I’m always taking about Mike for my material and Luke of course, always! In my first solo record there are Mike and Luke on the guitar tracks. So, those two guitar players are my favorites, without any doubts, and, in my humble opinion, they are the very best in the world. I also had others guitar players on my records, like Steve Overton that also features on the title track of my upcoming album (“Denizen Tenant” – n. d. r.) that I co-wrote with him and I got also to mention him. Steve is a brilliant guitar and bass player too. And another guy that I want mentioning is Oscar Bugarin that have played some great rhythm stuffs on the other song, “Never Saw You Coming”. So I’ve got some great guitar players on here. But Landau is one of the guys that perfectly knows my sound and how to crawl with his solos in between stuffs, so I don’t have to tell him anything! I just send him the music and he knows exactly what to do.

About your solo career, Joe, if I remind well You made several collaboration also with the former Toto vocalist Bobby Kimball. Have you ever think to do other collaboration with him in the future? Are you still in contact with him?

(Joe): oh, I haven’t been in contact with him and I guess there’s not much a possibility to do other things together because I’m not sure how his health is. But I really love working on those projects with him in the past and we did a tour together in Japan which was a lot of fun. And we became very good friends, we never worry anything, but good friends, certainly! He always has been a hero of mine as a singer, he never sing away, he’s just a funny guy and a great person. You know, without him there wouldn’t be no me. I really have just an incredible respect for Bobby and, listen, I’d love to work with him again, but I know he’s get no better a little bit and actually I’m not sure he can go out and tour anymore. But the one thing I know now about Bobby is that his voice is still there, he can sing great but I’m not sure he can hear as good as he used to. But his voice is still strong for a guy in the ‘70s. It was really great working together on those albums, also with Bill Camplin and Jason Scheff too!

As everyone knows, your daddy, John Williams, is a famous composer of soundtrack movies. How important was his influence on your career as a musicians Joe? Did you ever think to collaborate with him through the years?

(Joe): first of all, he was very important to my music, growing up with him. I grew up in a house where there was all music, so it’s like a second language for me (laughs)! His influence on me was fundamental, mainly when I start also as a TV and music composer and in that time he has helped me quite a bit. I usually called him asking “how could I do this” or “how do I conduct this”, questions like these and he has helped me suggesting with some great ideas. I’ve also collaborated directly with him, he got me a lot of jobs, I worked on three of the Star Wars films and a couple of others when I was very young, and so I have the chance to work and collaborate with him. He has been very kind to me all over the years!

In 1994 You collaborate on the soundtrack movie “The Lion King”, in particular way on “Hakuna Matata” alongside “Can You Feel The Love Tonight.”. How was this experience?

(Joe): it was really great and, I mean, it was a studio section. Before I was doing anything, when I was a teenager, I was a studio singer and I used to sing for TV and radio commercials, that kind of thing. So the “The Lion King” job was very much the same! I was just going into the studio to do a job and the producer told me what to sing and I’ve finished it only in two hours! They both thank me but I didn’t even know if I was going to be in the movie. So that’s how this experience was like, and six months later they sent to me and my wife tickets to a screening and then was when I found out I was in the movie (laughs)! For me it was incredible exciting, so I’m still proud of that I made in those days.

Now another question for You Joe! Concerning your amazing collaboration with Bill Champlin and Friestedt, I really appreciate your last album, “II”, published this year. Are you working with them on some new materials?

(Joe): oh thank You man, I really appreciate You’ve enjoyed it! I haven’t been work on anything new for now. These projects are really Peter Friestedt‘s babies, You know what I mean? Truly, I didn’t do so much work on this last album, it’s mostly Bill and Peter on this last one. Peter produced those records and I kind more of a guest singer on those projects. I know that Peter and I will probably do more in the future and with Bill of course, he’s always around this project and he wants to do some stuffs. But I’m not sure when It will happen because I’ve got a lot of stuffs to do with Luke, Toto and solo’s stuffs, whatever. All I can say is that Peter is always working and writing on some new music and compositions, he has got always great ideas and I’m sure there will be more in the future!

Concerning always the topic of the music collaboration, Steve, a little less than a month ago, your dear friend Eddie Van Halen – which was also involved on Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ – passed away. How do you want to remind him and share his memory?

(Luke): what could I say? He was a very very very close friend of mine, without any doubts, not just a guitar buddy! I’m really so crashed by his lost, I’m processing it in a different way and in a different time, You know, each one of us has his personal way to interiorize the sorrow. I love the man, I love his family, I’ve been in contact also with Alex through all these years. Also my older kid grew up with Eddie‘s guitar solos. His brother and I were friends since 40 and plus years ago and, trust me, music was a real small part of our strong and deep relationship. Otherwise I really loved to play some music with these guys, and obviously to record some stuff and jam together. Definitely they were a great part of my life!

Which is your relation with the new technologies used to compose your music, Joe? Has your way of composing evolved over the years with respect to these new devices or has the compositional process basically remained the same?

(Joe): well, generally, I still compose on piano, You know, I still use this instrument to do my writing process, but It has changed to great deal with the progression of technologies because, mainly, I’m not a great player. I have my style, but I usually use the technologies for the composition process too, especially all the great samples sounds that are available to us now. And the power of the computers and of the sequences that we have nowadays. So I use them all and I produce music as I’m writing and sometimes I’m inspired by the smart use of these new technologies also for the vocals too, so I definitely use them everyday.

About your deep relation with your son Trev (that I will interview next month), what you think about him as a musician, as a father and about his new band LEVARA, Steve? Are you planning to compose some new stuff together in the future?

(Luke): well, I think that anybody and so me too, as a father, have to be very proud of a son as mine, Trev. He did this band, LEVARA, and I wish him 20 years and more of overnight success. He’s producing records and writing several songs and solos for other musicians, he received his first gold disc (for the collaboration with the American rock act HALESTORM – n. d. r.) and he’s marring a very beautiful girl, Madison Cain, Jonathan Cain‘s daughter (the legendary keyboardist from Journey), and it’s a really funny things for us, me and Jonathan, because we’re old friends and we met since we were 19 years old I guess (laughs). Otherwise Trev is living his own life, in his own house, he’s got his shit together, and I’m so proud of him! He’s a great musician, an incredible songwriter too. He engineered the tracks that I did for Mark Lettieri from Snarky Puppy last night. I’m just so happy for him and It’s so funny when I remember my kid as a little child and I pulled up him from his mother, taking him with my hands, he’s really great!

Now a questions about your actual music listenings, Joe. Which are the young artists or band that are interesting you today and why?

(Joe): wow, it’s a difficult question to answer to (laughs). Well, just a second because I’ve been listening every kind of thing in this year because I’ve been working on my album! So now I have to go back into my phone and see what I was listening last year, You know what I mean? Because I have been listening very much of all (he search his listenings of last here on his mobile phone – ed.): I’ve been listening a lot of classical music mainly, more than anything, and also Keane lately, I really love that singer’s voice, and of course I’ve been listening a lot of Zeppelin lately, and lot of my favorites Beatles stuffs. You know, I have to get back out to see what there’s of new, because I have been spending so much time working on my album and preparing for its release, so I’m only in a little touch with what’s out there now.

Backing to your upcoming release, Steve, there will be five new original composition and three covers of some rock classic (Traffic’s “Low Spark of High Heeled Boys”, Joe Walsh’s “Welcome To The Club” and Robin Trower’s “Bridge of Sighs”). Why the choice to put these three covers? Any bonus tracks will be inserted for some special edition of the album?

(Luke): no, I wrote those eight songs for the album, and I pick up the ones that obscared me, not the ones that people normally do, and I wanna to pay tribute to the heroes of the early ‘70s. You know Joe Walsh is one of my hero and friend too, while Traffic‘s Low Spark is such a groovy obscure tune and I thought would fit the band really well, and…sorry but I forget the other one (laughs)! But anyway, oh yes, “Bridge of Sighs” because I wanted to pay tribute to Robin Trower, because I needed to freak out a little bit, and that was fun! In general I did and actually I do record mainly for myself, and obviously for the people that like it, I’m just trying to get out from the audience who dislikes the music that I do, simply. And trust me, Joe‘s album is really brilliant! Mine has more music that could be played alive, while Joe‘s one is more the opposite. So let me show You how I can produce a record by myself and blow your mind! I mean the composition, the vocals, the sounds it’s just psychedelic, it’s really cool man!

Related to the composition process behind the five new songs, Steve, could you tell us something more? Are there other special guests involved in these songs?

(Luke): no, there aren’t any other guest involved in this record. I have the same band and musicians for the whole album. As You could imagine Joe helped me with some backing vocals on several songs. You know every things we did in over dubs we did on the same day, right after we wrote the tracks and then I did the leads vocals and I’ve arranged every other things that I had to do. I didn’t want to over produce this record, because I want that It comes to be real, and it really comes true, and obviously “I don’t want to spend much moneys for this record” (laughs)! I’m so very curious to see the response of the fan and people in generally, how they will take it, because it’s a little bit different from the past, but I don’t know why.

Another one for Joe. Through all these years spent with Toto you’ve got the chance to share this experience with other amazing musicians as you. Some of them unfortunately passed away. How do you want to remind respectively Fergie Frederiksen and the Porcaro’s brother Jeff and Mike?

(Joe): well, what could I say? I remember them finely! Jeff of course It was a real kind of guy, I have great memories about him mainly for his love of music, his passion of playing every kind of style, and his departure was so painful to me! He was also the most disappointed when I was not doing very well before I came out from the band, but anyway we remain very close friends also after I left the band, he also played on my solo albums. And I learn a lot from Jeff about what it is to be professional, he talk and teach me a lot about how I could be professional and I’m very grateful to him for that! His departure was just a tragic lost…About Fergie, I’ve really never got the chance to meet him personally, face to face, but we’ve talked several time, and he sang on one of my album, and he actually filled in for me on a gig that I couldn’t make, it was in Jakarta one time, he went down and did a gig for me. But unfortunately I’ve missed the chance to meet him face to face before he passed away, which is a real shame! And then Mike of course, You know, I probably didn’t really get in know with him as I would like, I’ve mostly toured with him for a couple of years but Mike was still a kind of a “mystery” of a person, I didn’t get spend much time with Mike. But again, it was another tragic lost, one of those life that ended sooner.

Related to this last topic, if You have to present your music to someone who didn’t ever hear it, which album You would choice (between your Toto records, your solo’s ones and your collaborations) and why?

(Joe): oh, that’s another difficult question, but I will answer saying that I will suggest to people who doesn’t know me this new upcoming album, surely! Because I think that this is my best one, and I also think that in term of the songs on the records that I mad with Toto all, except for maybe ‘The Seventh One’ (laughs). And I’m most proud of this last one!

Now a little bit wired question Joe. Which is the funniest thing happened in your long career that You want to remind and share with us?

(Joe): oh God, one funny story is that I came out from a hotel totally naked, without any clothes! That happened one time in New Jersey when I was in Toto during the ‘80s, so I had to go to the lobby asking for the key because I didn’t have any possibility to come in my room (laughs)!

Dear Luke and Joe, thank You so much for the precious time You’re dedicating us! Last questions: could You send an advice to all the young musicians?

(Luke): thank You so much buddy! What could I say to all the young musicians? Get back out, keep practice and always playing lot, I don’t have any other words or deep wisdom to send as an advice to them! Only have fun with your music, and if those things will be great, just keep rising over the top, just it! Good luck to everybody!

(Joe): my advice it’s just “stay with it”! You know what I mean? Descipline is the most important thing, and don’t give up, I know it’s discouraging and there’s a lot people out that try to do it, but don’t be discouraged, give up and keep practicing, that’s the most important advice I send to all the young musicians in this period!
