PARIGI (Fr), Le Zénith, 27/01/19 – Non potevo sperare di iniziare il 2019 con un evento migliore: ammirare i miei amati Judas Priest nella meravigliosa Parigi! La Ville Lumiere, da sempre un punto di riferimento per la cultura, l’arte e la musica europea, non poteva che rappresentare la perfetta cornice metropolitana per l’immancabile evento Rock. La celebre Heavy Metal band britannica, per l’occasione, è stata accompagnata dai granitici Disconnected, in un turbinio di emozioni che il sottoscritto, in esclusiva per VeroRock.it, è pronto a condividere con tutti i lettori! Non riesco, al momento, a fare a meno di anticipare che ci saranno delle sorprese, ma proseguiamo con ordine: buona lettura a tutti!
Dopo esserci avviati in largo anticipo, da classici italiani di provincia preoccupati per le distanze dell’area metropolitana di Parigi, attendiamo l’apertura dei cancelli nel parco del complesso “La Villette”, nonostante le temperature non proprio miti per i nostri standard di ragazzi del sud Italia! Nel frattempo, ci intratteniamo (nonostante il nostro francese non proprio fluente) con il pubblico di ogni età che attende con noi in trepidante attesa: mi confronto con Laurent, un quarantenne dal profilo sobrio e dai modi cordiali, su chi sia il secondo miglior cantante metal di tutti i tempi. Io opto per Paul di Anno (e racconto a Laurent del mio incontro/intervista con Paul avvenuto nell’estate del 2014 – n. d. r.), lui per Ronnie James Dio: entrambi però, nonostante le divergenze di opinioni, ci ritroviamo in perfetta sintonia su chi sia il miglior metal singer in assoluto!
Colto dal desiderio di un caffè, mi allontano ed entro in un bar poco distante dai cancelli dove qualcosa colpisce la mia attenzione: il tamburellio delle mani sul tavolo (a imitazione di Scott Travis) e ascolto un fan intonare a cappella l’incipit di Painkiller. Compaiono poco dopo tre robusti addetti alla sicurezza che ci aprono le porte dei cancelli: la nostra attesa, finalmente, giunge al termine!
DISCONNECTED
Gli animi degli amanti della musica rock vengono scaldati dai Disconnected, nota band francese dedita ad un metal con forti influenze moderne. Dopo le prime roboanti canzoni, “Living Incomplete”, “Blind Faith” e “Losing Yourself Again”, mi rendo conto che, nonostante mi reputi da sempre un rocker “old school”, i Disconnected colpiscono la mia attenzione per la loro proposta di spessore e per le tematiche “esistenzialiste” dei loro testi: sarà mica l’influenza parigina di Jean-Paul Sarte?
Le successive “For All Our Sakes” e “White Colossus” ci vengono suonate con un’enorme carica di adrenalina, grazie all’arrembante presenza del frontman Ivan Pavlakovic (voce e testi), protagonista di un’encomiabile prova vocale, e al duo alla sei corde composto da Adrian Martinot (chitarra) e Romin Manogil (chitarra) dagli assoli grintosi e dal martellante ritmo di Jelly Cardarelli (batteria) e Romain Laure (basso).
Ammiro molto la loro performance e apprezzo anche la band nel momento in cui tributa il giusto riconoscimento agli “dei del metallo” che, di lì a poco, prenderanno posto sul palco dopo di loro. Rinnovo i complimenti a questi cinque hard rockers, con la speranza di ascoltarli ancora, in occasione dei miei vari giri per l’Europa! A bientot, cher Disconnected…

JUDAS PRIEST
Sul palco, dopo la performance dei Disconnected, scende un enorme sipario con il logo dei Priest, anche per agevolare il lavoro dei numerosi tecnici occupati a garantirci il suono che tanto ci piace: Manca poco all’arrivo dei mitici Metal Gods! Lo sfondo del sipario riporta varie frasi tratte dai testi delle canzoni dei rocker di Birmingham: per ingannare la trepidante attesa, inizio una breve quanto accesa competizione con il mio vicino francese su chi indovina più canzoni dalle frasi riportate nel sipario (come si fa a non conoscere “Ram It Down”?, dai, mon cher amie…).
Le note di “War Pigs” dei loro concittadini Black Sabbath segnano la fine della nostra piccola sfida: ecco finalmente i Judas Priest in tutto il loro splendore! Mi sembra un’apparizione e non riesco ancora quasi a rendermi conto di averli lì, a pochi metri da me: il biondo crinito Richie Faulkner (chitarra) intona il riff di “Firepower” mentre il loro spettacolo musicale, tra i classici del metal, prende atto. Le mie orecchie restano inebriate dallo show di Rob Halford (voce) e soci: partono una dopo l’altra le celebri “Running Wild”, “Grinder”, “Sinner”, “The Ripper” e il pubblico presente è in visibilio per la performance dei cinque rocker ancora in grandissima forma!
Subito mi colpisce la presenza scenica e la strepitosa voce del Metal God, mentre continua la selezione delle canzoni, perfettamente bilanciata tra pietre miliari e brani di più recente produzione, con “Lightning Strike” che apre all’inattesa “Desert Plains” o una grintosa “No Surrender” che prelude all’ipnotica “Turbo Lover”: non posso che apprezzare la setlist proposta, prechè sembra scelta proprio per accontentare sia gli amanti dei primi dischi, che quelli delle ultime uscite firmate Judas Priest! “Killing Machine” rappresenta una delle chicche della serata, perchè non era stata più eseguita dal gruppo addirittura dal lontano 24.11.1978: la serata mi riserverà altre sorprese? Chissà…
Tutti noi fan ci ritroviamo a intonare (o a tentare di farlo) il finale di “The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Prong Crown)”, mentre Halford si avvicina a noi e porge il suo microfono alla platea, a supporto del cantato durante i cori centrali! Ammirio il suono martellante di Scott Travis (batteria) e la maestria di Ian Hill (basso) nelle successive songs, sulla struggente “Night Comes Down” così come sulle recenti “Guardians” e “Rising From Ruins”: ogni finale di canzone è accompagnato da un fragoroso e profondo applauso che dura fino all’inizio del pezzo successivo! Lo show continua con l’arrembante “Freewheel Burning” e le immancabili “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’” ed “Hell Bent for Leather”: le canzoni sembrano legate tutte da un unico filo conduttore e si susseguono senza forzatura, facendomi apprezzare l’apparente semplicità nel modo in cui i chitarristi approcciano a far stridere le proprie asce incandescenti! Non posso che notare, con un po’ di rammarico, l’assenza di uno dei fondatori della band (tra l’altro, uno dei miei chitarristi preferiti in assoluto – n. d. r.), e pure – allo stesso tempo – non posso che constatare che il suo posto è stato degnamente mantenuto da Andy Sneap (chitarra), con personalità e senza alcuna imitazione dell’assente leggendario Glenn Tipton!
Resto profondamente senza parole dinanzi alla performance di Halford durante l’esecuzione della granitica “Painkiller”: un boato celebra il Metal God, a dimostrazione di tutto l’affetto che da sempre anche il popolo metallico francese ha nei suoi confronti!
Il finale dell’evento metal è tutto affidato ai classici della band, che mi regalano ulteriori impagabili emozioni, ecco on stage l’accoppiata “The Hellion/Electric Eye”, “Metal Gods”, “Breaking The Law”, “Living After Midnight”.
La chiusura dello show è sulle note della canzone “We Are The Champions” dei Queen, mentre i Priest si allontanano dal palco, promettendoci un gradito ritorno con il banner esibito che fieramente titola “The Priest Will Be Back”! Il pubblico offre un’ovazione di giubilo alla band, invocando altre canzoni mentre io sono ancora esterrefatto e profondamente incredulo.

Proprio nel momento in cui pensavo fosse tutto (purtroppo) finito, giungo nel luogo in cui la fortuna e l’intuito mi hanno condotto: mi avvicino a Scott Travis e gli chiedo di fare una foto insieme (caspita… ma quanto è alto…?), mentre poco dopo si avvicina Richie Faulkner che subito scopre, dinanzi a una esclamazione tipicamente italiana, che non sono francese. Scambio qualche parola anche con Andy Sneap e saluto un sorridente Ian Hill, complimentandomi con tutti per l’evento musicale appena ammirato.
Ma… non manca qualcuno?
Improvvisamente mi viene in mente un passo del XXXIII Canto del Paradiso dantesco, nel momento in cui noto che sono a due passi da Rob Halford…mi avvicino e immortalo il momento insieme: emana un carisma inaudito anche lontano dalle luci del palco!
…Usciamo a rivedere le stelle, con le orecchie ancora piene di note e con il cuore saturo di emozioni. Il resto delle sensazioni lo tengo per me.
Devo tutto a te che hai reso possibile tutto questo.

I could not hope to start 2019 with a better event: admiring my beloved Judas Priest in wonderful Paris! Ville Lumiere, always an important point for European culture, art and music, would only represent the perfect metropolitan setting for the inevitable Rock event. The famous British Heavy Metal band, for this occasion, was accompanied by the granite Disconnected, in a whirlwind of emotions that the I am ready to share with all readers, exclusively for VeroRock.it!
I can’t help anticipating that there will be some surprises, but let’s go ahead with order: good reading to all!
After heading well in advance, as per our behaviour of provincial Italians, worried about the distances of the metropolitan area of Paris, we await the opening of the gates in the park of the complex “La Villette”, despite the temperatures not really mild for our standards as southern Italians. Meanwhile, we chat up (despite our French not quite fluent) with the audience of all ages waiting with us: I chat with Laurent, a forty-year-old with a sober profile and friendly ways, on who is the second best metal singer of all times. My choice is Paul Di Anno (and I tell Laurent about my meeting / interview with Paul in the summer of 2014 – ed), he chooses Ronnie James Dio: both, despite the differences of opinion, are in perfect harmony on best metal singer ever!
Caught by the desire for a coffee, I walk away and walk in a bar not far from the gates where something catches my attention: the tambourine of the hands on the table (in imitation of Scott Travis) and I the incipit of Painkiller. Shortly after three robust security guards appear who open the gates to us: our wait finally comes to an end!
DISCONNECTED
The hearts of rock music lovers are warmed up by the Disconnected, a famous French metal band with strong modern influences. After the first roaring songs, “Living Incomplete”, “Blind Faith” and “Losing Yourself Again”, I realize that, despite the fact that I have always considered myself as an “old school” rocker, the Disconnected hit my attention for their proposal of thickness and for the “existentialist” themes of their lyrics: will it be the Parisian influence of Jean-Paul Sarte?
The following “For All Our Sakes” and “White Colossus” are played with an enormous adrenaline rush, thanks to the amazing presence of frontman Ivan Pavlakovic (voice and lyrics), protagonist of an encumbrous vocal test, and the duo six strings composed by Adrian Martinot (guitar) and Romin Manogil (guitar) with gritty solos and the pounding rhythm of Jelly Cardarelli (drums) and Romain Laure (bass).
I really admire their performance and I also appreciate the band when it comes to the right recognition to the “gods of the metal” that, shortly thereafter, will take place on the stage after them. I renew the compliments to these five hard rockers, hoping to hear them again, on the occasion of my various tours around Europe!

On stage, after the performance of the Disconnected, falls a huge curtain with the Priest logo, also to facilitate the work of the many technicians occupied to ensure the sound that we like so much: the arrival of the legendary Metal Gods is coming up! The background of the curtain reports various phrases taken from the lyrics of the rockers from Birmingham: to deceive the eagerly awaited start a short and heated competition with my French neighbour on who guesses more songs from the phrases reported in the curtain (how can you not guess “Ram It Down”, c’mon mon cher amie…).
The notes of “War Pigs” by their fellow Black Sabbath mark the end of our little challenge: here finally the Judas Priest in all their glory! It seems to me an apparition and I still can’t even realize I have them there, a few meters from me: the blond crinkled Richie Faulkner (guitar) intones the riff of “Firepower” while their musical show, among the classics of metal, takes note. My ears remain inebriated by Rob Halford’s show (voice) and members: the famous “Running Wild”, “Grinder”, “Sinner”, “The Ripper” start and the audience is in raptures for the performance of the five rockers still in great shape!
I am Immediately struck by the stage presence and the amazing voice of Metal God, while the selection of songs continues, perfectly balanced between milestones and tracks of more recent production, with “Lightning Strike” that opens the unexpected “Desert Plains” or a gritty “No Surrender” which is a prelude to the hypnotic “Turbo Lover”: I can only appreciate the proposed setlist, because it seems to be chosen just to please both the lovers of the first records, and those who love of the latest releases by Judas Priest! “Killing Machine” is one of the treats of the evening, because it had not been performed by the group even since 24.11.1978: the evening will reserve me other surprises? Who knows …
All of us fans find ourselves intoning (or trying to do o) the finale of “The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Prong Crown)”, while Halford approaches us and holds his microphone to the audience, to support the singing during the central choirs! I admire the hammering sound of Scott Travis on drums and the mastery of Ian Hill on the following songs, on the tormenting “Night Comes Down” as well as on the recent “Guardians” and “Rising From Ruins”: each song ending is accompanied by a thunderous and deep applause that lasts until the beginning of the next piece! The show continues with the arson “Freewheel Burning” and the inevitable “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin ‘” and “Hell Bent for Leather”: the songs seem to be linked by a single common thread and follow each other without forcing, making me appreciate the apparent simplicity in the way guitarists approach to make their glowing axes crunch! I can not but notice, with a little ‘regret, the absence of one of the founders of the band (among other things, one of my favorite guitarists in absolute – ed), and yet – at the same time – I can only note that his place was worthily maintained by Andy Sneap (guitar), with personality and without any imitation of the legendary absentee Glenn Tipton!
I remain deeply speechless before the performance of Halford during the execution of the granite “Painkiller”: a roar celebrates Metal God, demonstrating all the affection that the French metal people have always had towards him!
The final of the metal event is all entrusted to the classics of the band, which give me more priceless emotions, here on stage the coupling “The Hellion / Electric Eye”, “Metal Gods”, “Breaking The Law”, “Living After Midnight “.
The closing of the show is on the notes of the song “We Are The Champions” by Queen, while the Priest depart from the stage, promising us a welcome return with the banner exhibited proudly titled “The Priest Will Be Back”! The audience offers a jubilation ovation to the band, invoking other songs while I am still amazed and deeply disbelieved.

Just when I thought it was all (unfortunately) finished, I come to the place where luck and intuition have led me: I approach Scott Travis and I ask him to take a picture together (wow … but how tall is he? …?), while soon approached Richie Faulkner who immediately discovers, in front of a typically Italian exclamation, that I am not French. I exchange a few words with Andy Sneap and greet a smiling Ian Hill, complimenting everyone with the newly admired musical event.
But … isn’t there someone missing??
I suddenly remember a passage from the XXXIII Canto of ParadisoDante, when I notice that I am close to Rob Halford … I approach and immortalize the moment together: it emanates an unheard of charisma even far from the lights of the stage!
…And thence we came forth to see again the stars, with the ears full of notes and the heart full of emotions.The rest of my feelings I will keep for myself.I owe everything to you, who made all of this possible.
